Job Descriptions:

The ideal candidate would be able to:

Regular Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Consultant Gastroenterologist in the diagnosis and management of patients with gastrointestinal disorders.
  • Conduct detailed history-taking, physical examinations and form preliminary diagnoses of GI conditions.
  • Provide ongoing care for patients with conditions such as liver disease, peptic ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome and other digestive tract issues.
  • Monitor and manage patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Assist in performing and interpreting diagnostic procedures like endoscopy, colonoscopy, liver biopsy and abdominal ultrasounds.
  • Prepare patients for procedures, ensuring all necessary investigations and pre-procedure care is provided.
  • Assist in performing therapeutic procedures such as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) under supervision.
  • Provide emergency care for patients presenting with acute GI conditions, such as gastrointestinal bleeding, perforations and liver failure.
  • Participate in the hospital’s on-call duty roster for gastroenterology emergencies.
  • Stabilize and manage patients with life-threatening GI conditions and collaborate with other teams when necessary.
  • Maintain thorough and accurate medical records for all gastroenterology patients.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with all FMIC rules and regulation.
  • Ensure that discharge summaries, procedure reports and progress notes are completed promptly and comply with the institution’s standards.
  • Regularly update patients’ medical files, including investigation results, treatments provided and follow-up plans.
  • Educate patients and their families about their conditions, treatment plans, dietary recommendations and lifestyle changes needed to manage GI diseases.
  • Provide clear instructions on post-procedure care and medication adherence.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team, including surgeons, nurses, nutritionists and radiologists, to ensure a holistic approach to patient care.
  • Stay updated with new advancements in the field and apply evidence-based practices to improve patient outcomes.
  • Adhere to departmental policies, procedures and objectives, ongoing quality improvement objectives and safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Assure quality and continuity of care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Align with goals and objectives of department/Organization.
  • Any other assignment by immediate supervisor/Head of the department.

Periodic Responsibilities:

  • Participate in departmental audits and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, clinical case discussions and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Assist in the training of junior doctors and interns in the department.
  • Attend workshops, conferences and ongoing professional development opportunities related to gastroenterology.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, mortality reviews and case discussions.
  • Engage in clinical research and contribute to the development of best practices in gastroenterology.

Job Requirements:

  • Strong knowledge of medical and therapeutic practices related to gastroenterology.
  • Excellent diagnostic and clinical skills, particularly related to GI diseases.
  • Ability to manage patients in both acute and chronic settings.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards of patient care.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills,
  • Having good communication and interpersonal skill in Dari, English and Pashto languages
  • Good computer skills specially in MS Office programs.
