Job Descriptions:

Job Purpose

The Ophthalmic Technician supports ophthalmologists by conducting diagnostic eye tests, preparing patients for examinations, and managing ophthalmic equipment. This role includes performing vision assessments, maintaining accurate patient records, and ensuring an efficient workflow within NOOR Eye Hospitals.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Always wear the hospital uniform during duty hours. Staff are responsible for maintaining their uniforms in a clean and presentable condition.
  • Assist in restocking the Outpatient Department (OPD) each morning when the OPD nurse is unavailable, ensuring necessary supplies such as eye drops, sterile instruments, and other materials are in place.
  • Accurately evaluate all patients referred for refraction and record findings clearly and thoroughly on patient records.
  • Provide guidance and education to patients regarding their visual needs and available options for corrective lenses.
  • Assess binocular vision, accommodation, and ocular motility accurately, and provide appropriate management or referrals.
  • Issue clear and complete prescriptions for eyeglasses, ensuring they meet patient needs.
  • Perform diagnostic procedures such as nasolacrimal duct irrigation, intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement, and blood pressure checks using sterile techniques.
  • Conduct initial examinations and triage, manage minor eye conditions, and refer complex cases to IAM physicians.
  • Document all findings and recommendations accurately and legibly on the patient’s hospital card.
  • Conduct keratometry and A-scan measurements accurately to determine intraocular lens (IOL) power for patients scheduled for IOL surgery.
  • Assist with and perform simple extraocular surgical procedures under the supervision of a physician, as required.
  • Participate in clinical teaching for OTTP trainees and medical students at IAM facilities.
  • Some technicians will be involved in preparing and delivering formal instruction as part of the OTTP course curriculum.
  • Evaluate patients with low vision for visual aids, provide training in their proper use, and manage inventory of low vision devices.
  • Participate in eye camps and community-based eye care activities as requested.
  • Provide support or substitute in various departments including Wards, Treatment Rooms, Operating Rooms, Vision Assessment, and Patient Data Management, in coordination with treatment room nurses and other ophthalmic technicians.
  • Perform all duties under the guidance and supervision of the Attending Physician and Medical Director.

Job Requirements:

  • An associate degree in Ophthalmology or a Certificate in Ophthalmic Technology from a recognized institution is required.
  • Additional certification or training in vision screening or optometric assistance is desirable. A bachelor’s degree in Ophthalmology is also preferred.
  • A minimum of one year of relevant experience in a similar role within an eye care or healthcare setting.
  • Basic understanding of eye health, vision testing procedures, and optical prescription practices.
  • Skilled in conducting standard vision assessments, including visual acuity, refraction, intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement, and color vision testing.
  • Capable of performing specialized tests such as retinal imaging, visual field analysis, and optical coherence tomography (OCT).
