Purpose of the position:

The Nurse Anaesthetist will provide safe and effective anaesthesia and care before, during and after the surgical procedure and follow any National Guidelines that apply to anaesthesia in Afghanistan. The Nurse Anaesthetist will also provide anaesthetic or resuscitation support to patients in other departments of the hospital when needed

 

 

 

 

Job Descriptions:

 

  • In the administration of anesthetist:
    • To perform a pre-operative assessment on all patients allocated to you (elective and emergency) who will undergo anaesthesia of all types and to record the assessment on the patient’s own anaesthetic sheet.
    • To inform the Senior  Anaesthetist or the Anaesthesiologist in charge of any patient with other illnesses who may require further treatment before anaesthesia or who may be unstable before, during or after anaesthesia.
    • To advise other medical staff of appropriate investigations for the patient.
    • To discuss with the patient the type of anesthtic planned, the risks of that anesthetic, and to answer the patient’s questions.
    • To provide monitoring and other necessary care to patients undergoing procedures with local anesthesia or sedation
    • Provide safe, effective and appropriate anesthesia, based on the pre-operative assessment performed and discussed with the patient.
    • To keep records of all observations and anaesthesia given on the anaesthesia sheet
    • To give a comprehensive handover to the recovery nurse.

 

  • When asked to care for patients in other departments outside the operating theatre, you must ensure that the patient is safe at all times – if necessary, take oxygen, emergency drugs and other equipment appropriate for the situation to the patient, or move the patient to the operating room. You should refuse to do any anesthetic procedure on a patient if the situation is unsafe.
  • Provide emergency resuscitation skills to any patient who needs this when asked by other medical staff. You are expected to attend to the patient without delay.
  • Keep the on-call phone with you and switched on when on call and record all phone calls in the telephone log book.
  • Attend all teaching sessions provided by the anesthesia department.
  • Sometimes you will be asked to assist other nurses with various nursing procedures – whilst this will not be a regular requirement, you will be expected to help occasionally when asked.
  • Sometimes we have patients who need to be transferred in the ambulance to another hospital – you should accompany them in the ambulance if needed.

Job Requirements:

  • Honesty and professionalism in all dealings with patients and their relatives
  • Anaesthetist Qualification either obtained in Afghanistan or approved by the Ministry of Public Health or Ministry of Higher Education as equivalent.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English
  • Minimum of 3 years working as a nurse anesthetist
  • Able to admit their mistakes, able to take charge and work well in a team, calm in a crisis and willing to learn from seniors and visiting anesthesiologists.
