Program Description: The USAID funded Urban Health Initiative (UHI) Program’s goal is to improve health outcomes of people living in urban areas, particularly focusing on the health of women and children and other vulnerable populations. Interventions aim to increase demand, access and quality of health services. Lead by Jhpiego and implemented by a dynamic consortium of organizations, UHI is implemented in five cities in Afghanistan – Kabul, Herat, Mazar-e-Sharif, Jalalabad and Kandahar.
Position: Nutrition counselors (1)
Location/ Venue: Health Facility (MRH)
Supervisor (whom to report): Head of Health Facility/MNH‐nutrition mentor
Main Responsibilities
1: Growth Monitoring Implementation and Promotion
Registration of growth monitoring of all children <2yrs including height, weight and MUAC.
Classification of Children into normal, moderate acute malnutrition and severe acute malnutrition (MAM
and SAM).
Counseling of mothers or attendants of all children <2yrs regarding Infant and young child feeding and
infection prevention.
For a normal/healthy child, giving appropriate counseling regarding strengthening and promotion of Infant
and Young Child Feeding (IYCF).
If child is affected with Moderate or Severe acute malnutrition, give IYCF counselling in order for the child to return to its normal nutrition condition.
If possible, conduction of supplementary feeding practical sessions.
If child is affected with severe acute malnutrition (SAM), refer the child to head of clinic for better
treatment.
Investigation of whether child has received Vitamin A in the NID campaigns. If not, administration of Vitamin
A.
2: Pregnant and Lactating Mothers’ Counseling
Counseling of lactating mothers about proper methods of nutrition during pregnancy including
importance of daily iron and folic acid supplements.
Ensure that pregnant women receive adequate iron and folic acid supplements from health facility.
Promotion of Iodized salt consumption.
3: Community Based Responsibilities
Work in collaboration with CHS and CHWs. Support CHWs in the following arenas:
o Growth monitoring and IYCF counseling of all children <2yrs according to community based
nutrition packages. o Counseling of lactating mothers about proper methods of nutrition during pregnancy
including importance of daily iron and folic acid supplements.
Imparting one or two nutrition message to the community each month.
Supporting CHS/CHWs for household meetings, growth retarded children and those suffering
from severe acute malnutrition which need assistance.
4: Registration and Reporting:
Regular reportings, supervision and follow up of nutrition service delivery including MCH
nutrition booklet.
beneficiaries that need follow up meetings and subsequently, engage CHS and CHWs.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Nurse/midwife
Nutrition initial training certificate is an advantage.
At least having 1‐year nutrition counseling experience in health facility and familiarity with HMIS tools and reporting format.
Abilities/Skills:
Ability to work successfully in teams, across a diverse team in a complex environment with multiple tasks,short deadlines, and intense pressure to perform
Strong skills in facilitation, team building, and coordination
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including strong writing and communication skills in local languages Pashto and Dari.
