Job Descriptions:

The MHPSS Counselor is responsible for providing mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) services to individuals, families, and communities served by the mobile health team. The role includes offering culturally appropriate counseling, conducting awareness sessions, and facilitating referrals for specialized care as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Counseling and Support Services:

  • Provide individual and group counseling sessions to people experiencing psychosocial distress.
  • Support individuals coping with trauma, grief, anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges.
  • Offer psychological first aid (PFA) during emergencies or crises.

2. Community Awareness and Education:

  • Conduct awareness sessions on mental health, stress management, and coping mechanisms.
  • Promote understanding and reduce stigma associated with mental health conditions within communities.
  • Educate caregivers and community members on how to identify signs of distress and provide initial support.

3. Case Identification and Referrals:

  • Identify cases needing specialized mental health care and refer them to appropriate services.
  • Follow up on referrals to ensure clients receive the necessary care and support.
  • Maintain an updated directory of mental health resources and service providers in the area.

4. Capacity Building:

  • Train community health workers (CHWs) and mobile health team members on basic psychosocial support skills.
  • Build the capacity of local stakeholders to provide ongoing psychosocial support in the community.

5. Data Collection and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records.
  • Submit timely reports on activities, challenges, and success stories to the supervisor.
  • Participate in regular case reviews and team meetings to ensure quality service delivery.

6. Team Collaboration:

  • Work closely with other team members, including medical staff and nutrition counselors, to provide integrated care.
  • Participate in planning and coordination meetings to align psychosocial support activities with other health interventions.

7. Community Engagement:

  • Build trust with community members and leaders to encourage participation in MHPSS activities.
  • Address concerns raised by the community and provide feedback to the team for continuous improvement.

Job Requirements:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, MD, or a related medical field. A diploma with significant field experience may be considered.
  2. At least 1-2 years of experience in providing psychosocial support or counseling, preferably in humanitarian or field settings.
  3. Experience in working with vulnerable populations, including women and children.
  4. Strong knowledge of mental health and psychosocial support principles, including PFA.
  5. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  6. Ability to work effectively in culturally diverse and resource-constrained environments.
  7. Fluency in local languages spoken in the target area.
