Job Descriptions:

  • Position Purpose:
  • The Midwife will provide comprehensive maternal and newborn care services in mobile health clinics, serving remote or underserved populations. The midwife will be responsible for delivering prenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care, as well as supporting health education and promotion efforts related to maternal and child health.
  • Scope of Work:
  • Prenatal Care:
  • Conduct regular prenatal check-ups for pregnant women, including monitoring maternal health, fetal development, and vital signs.
  • Provide health education and counseling to pregnant women on topics such as nutrition, hygiene, birth preparedness, family planning, and common pregnancy-related conditions.
  • Identify high-risk pregnancies and refer them to appropriate healthcare facilities for further care, if necessary.
  • Perform basic screenings, including blood pressure checks, urine analysis, and fetal heart monitoring.
  • Administer vaccinations, such as tetanus toxoid, as required during pregnancy.
  • Assisting in Childbirth:
  • Assist in normal deliveries, providing support to mothers during labor, including emotional support, pain management, and monitoring the progress of labor.
  • Perform deliveries in the mobile clinic, ensuring the safety and well-being of both mother and child.
  • Recognize and manage complications during labor and delivery, including timely referral or coordination with medical doctors for interventions if needed (e.g., cesarean section).
  • Ensure proper documentation of all childbirth-related activities, including delivery outcomes, newborn health, and maternal care.
  • Postnatal Care:
  • Provide immediate postnatal care to mothers and newborns, including monitoring vital signs, assessing maternal and newborn health, and offering breastfeeding support.
  • Provide education on newborn care, including hygiene, breastfeeding, and immunization schedules.
  • Assist with family planning counseling and services, offering guidance on birth spacing, contraception options, and maternal health.
  • Conduct follow-up visits or home visits when possible to monitor the health of mothers and newborns and address any concerns.
  • Health Education and Promotion:
  • Conduct health education sessions for mothers, families, and communities on safe childbirth practices, newborn care, breastfeeding, nutrition, and family planning.
  • Advocate for maternal health practices, including encouraging antenatal visits, safe delivery practices, and postnatal care.
  • Promote community awareness about maternal and child health, helping to reduce stigma and cultural barriers to care.
  • Emergency Care and Referrals:
  • Provide basic emergency care to women and newborns in distress, including resuscitation and stabilization.
  • Recognize and respond to obstetric emergencies, such as preeclampsia, hemorrhage, obstructed labor, or neonatal complications, and facilitate appropriate referrals to higher-level facilities when required.
  • Support the mobile health team in responding to public health emergencies, including outbreaks or disaster situations.
  • Collaboration and Teamwork:
  • Work closely with the MD, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in the mobile clinic to provide holistic care.
  • Assist in the coordination of patient care, including referrals and follow-up services.
  • Provide mentorship and support to community health workers or other local healthcare providers in maternal and child health practices.
  • Documentation and Reporting:
  • Keep accurate and up-to-date records of all maternal and child health care services provided, including prenatal visits, delivery outcomes, postnatal care, and health education sessions.
  • Report daily, weekly, and monthly data on maternal and child health indicators to the team leader or relevant program manager.
  • Ensure patient confidentiality and adherence to ethical standards in all aspects of care.
  • Medical Supplies and Equipment Management:
  • Ensure that essential maternal and newborn health supplies (e.g., medications, delivery kits, newborn care items) are available and properly managed.
  • Assist in inventory management and report any shortages or issues with medical supplies.

  • Key Deliverables:
  • Safe, high-quality prenatal, delivery, and postnatal care to mothers and newborns in mobile health settings.
  • Health education programs to improve maternal and child health awareness in the community.
  • Accurate documentation of all health services provided, including referrals and follow-ups.
  • Support to emergency medical interventions, when necessary, ensuring timely referrals to higher-level care.
  • Active participation in maternal and child health outreach programs.
  • Any other duties assigned by Supervisors or HEWAD leadership.

Job Requirements:

The successful applicant will need to address the following criteria:

  1. Midwife graduated from an intermediate medical institute or equivalent to it (three years of medical training).
  2. Minimum two-years work experience at a similar position.
  3. Work experience with other health organizations.
  4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work and deal successfully in a multicultural environment.
  1. Problem solving skills.
