Afghan Midwives Association (AMA)

The AMA is the technical body for midwifery education, professional development, and policies that enable every midwife in Afghanistan so midwives can practice the highest level of care for the mothers and newborns in the country. The AMA is a member of key national and international forums. For example, AMA is an active member of the Human Resource Development Task Force, the National Reproductive Health Task Force, The Maternal Newborn Health committee, the Afghan Women Network, and the Secretariat for National Nursing and Midwifery Steering Committee. Similarly, at the regional and international level, AMA is an active member of the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), and White Ribbon Alliance (WRA) for safe motherhood and women empowerment; also a member of the Asia Midwifery Regional Resource Centre.

Job Descriptions:

Purpose of the position: Responsible for providing mentorship and on job training to the midwives, midwifery students and any other trainees that related to the areas of intervention in MLMCC, to deliver the high-quality midwifery care through modelling, positive behavior, education, observation, crisis intervention, problem-solving, clear communication and team work with Midwives Midwife Supervisors and other related department staff. Monitor and evaluate midwives to maintain compliance with midwifery standards and MLMCC policies and procedures.

 

Responsibilities of Mentor:

  1. Adhere to the values, policies and procedures of AMA.
  2. Read and complete the MLMCC guidelines within the three-month probation period.
  3. Encourage midwives, midwifery students, trainees, maternity wards’ cleaners and Patient’s Aids to uphold and adhere of the policies and procedures of AMA including Maternity policies and procedures.
  4. Attend and participate in all midwifery educational meetings and supervisory meetings as requested by the Head of Midwife.
  5. Partake in conducting annual appraisals and evaluations of MLMCC staff (Midwives, midwives’ interns, and Cleaners) with Midwife Supervisors and Head of Midwife.
  6. Partake and promote patient and staff safety through monitoring of infection prevention policy in all related areas of intervention.
  7. Work based on MLMCC monthly schedule approved by the Head of Midwife.
  8. Enhance the quality of data at MLMCC.
  9. Prepare monthly and bi-weekly reports and submit them to the project coordinator.

 

Communication and Coordination:

  1. Communicate concerns and problems directly to the Head of Midwifery.
  2. Have continuous coordination and communication with Midwives Supervisors and head midwife.
  3. Take the responsibility of the Midwife Supervisor in case of her physical absence.
  4. Provide orientation and on job training for new midwives, midwifery students and any other trainees in all areas of MLMCC in coordination with midwife supervisors and Head of Midwife.
  5. Improve the quality of midwifery care at MLMCC.
  6. Organize and coordinate with the Head of Midwife a planned teaching program and lectures for the midwife staff. 
  7. Facilitates the annual staff assessment in cooperation with the Head of Midwife.

Professional Development:

  1. Model professional behavior, attitude, and appearance consistent with national and international midwifery standards.
  2. Accept responsibility for personal and professional accountability and development.
  3. Promote positive changes in the knowledge, skill, behavior and attitude of midwives.
  4. Monitor and observe the midwifery staff and bring to the Head Midwife attention, areas that are below the national and international midwifery standards.
  5. Provide crisis intervention, problem-solving, encouragement and team work with midwives whenever circumstances arise. 
  6. Provide support, motivation and encouragement to Midwifery staff.
  7. Promote positive work environment and team building in work place.
  8. Observe and monitor the MLMCC staff and identify weak areas for proper intervention.
  9. Adapt training to address any areas that do not meet the MLMCC standards.
  10. Organize the necessary teaching sessions for supportive staff.  These sessions can be coordinated with the Head of Midwife.   

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Graduation from an approved Afghanistan National Midwifery Program that is recognized by MOPH or MOHE.
  2. At least 2 years’ experience as a midwife trainer or mentor in Midwifery profession.
  3. Good reading, writing, and verbal communication skills with local languages and English, as well as computer skills preferably in Microsoft Office.
  4. Having strong Commitment to midwifery profession.
  5. Having strong communication, teaching and team building skills.
  6. Confidence, ability to make decisions, and management skills would be preferred. 
  7. Ability to communicate clearly and work well with others in a team environment.
  8. Ability and willingness to work under pressure circumstances as a part of professional team.
