Program Description: The USAID funded Urban Health Initiative (UHI) Program’s goal is to improve health outcomes of people living in urban areas, particularly focusing on the health of women and children and other vulnerable populations. Interventions aim to increase demand, access and quality of health services. Lead by Jhpiego and implemented by a dynamic consortium of organizations, UHI is implemented in five cities in Afghanistan – Kabul, Herat, Mazar-e-Sharif, Jalalabad and Kandahar.
Responsibilities:
Hygiene and Sanitation:
Perform tasks related to hygiene following established protocols and security rules.
Maintain a clean and disinfected environment in the healthcare facility (HF), including
infrastructure, furniture, walls, floors, and some medical materials, using provided tools and
equipment.
Clean floors, equipment, beds, toilets, and showers according to protocols and schedules.
Collect, sort, and evacuate medical waste to designated sites and empty dustbins as needed to
ensure a safe and efficient environment.
Promote awareness of hygiene and sanitation measures among patients, visitors, and staff, ensuring
proper use of water distribution points, latrines, handwashing stations, and washing areas in
collaboration with nursing and health promotion teams.
Refill water containers (drinking and handwashing points) and ensure soap availability. Install
mosquito nets for inpatient beds and carry out laundry activities per protocols.
Properly use, store, and maintain hygiene and sanitation equipment and tools, ensuring availability
of necessary supplies by preparing orders for ongoing needs.
Report any maintenance or repair needs related to hygiene to the line manager and provide regular
feedback on tasks and incidents.
Security and Organization:
Organize and manage the flow of people coming for check-ups, maintaining order and queues at the
HF.
Ensure the implementation of safety and security measures for clients and patients upon arrival and
departure from the HF.
Educate clients and patients on facility rules and remove trespassers or unwanted individuals as
necessary.
Notify relevant authorities in case of accidents or criminal activities and report to supervisors
regularly.
Food Preparation and Kitchen Management:
Procure food supplies required for daily operations and prepare meals (including for groups of over
30 people) as needed.
Review production schedules to determine food requirements and assemble necessary supplies and
equipment.
Prepare a wide variety of foods (e.g., vegetables, fruits, meats, soups, salads, cereals) per recipes and
ensure quality by testing cooked food.
Carve and display meats, vegetables, and salads, replenishing service lines as needed.
Maintain accurate records of food supplies and freezer/fridge temperatures.
Detect and dispose of spoiled food or defective supplies and equipment, addressing any unusual
conditions.
Maintain high standards of sanitation, kitchen hygiene, food service techniques, and safety.
Clean work areas, utensils, and equipment and cater for special events as required.
Miscellaneous Duties:
Address daily needs related to equipment and food supplies, and assist supporting staff (cleaners)
when required.
Report any damage to the kitchen or office building to the line supervisor.
Maintain a well-dressed, professional, punctual, and polite demeanor. Smoking is prohibited.
Perform other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor.
