The International Assistance Mission (IAM) is an International Non-Government Organization registered in Switzerland (registration #CH-660-1239000-6) and Afghanistan (registration #001). IAM is one of the oldest NGOs in Afghanistan. IAM established the NOOR (National Organization for Ophthalmic Rehabilitation) Eye Care Programme in 1966 with the goal of providing high quality and affordable access to eye care to the people of Afghanistan.

Job Descriptions:

Key responsibilities:

  • At all times when on duty, wear the hospital uniform provided. Staff are responsible for keeping their uniforms clean and repaired.
  • Work in the outpatient departments, inpatient wards, and operating theater as the IAM work schedule dictates.
  • Make complete inpatient rounds each normal workday with ward nurses, other ophthalmologists, and trainees.
  • Examine and treat patients in the outpatient department on your team’s assigned days until at least 1 PM, or until no registered patients remain to be seen, whichever is later.
  • Educate patients carefully about their conditions and treatment and refer patients when necessary.
  • Record all relevant history, findings, and orders on patient outpatient and inpatient forms in a legible and detailed manner.
  • Keep statistics on patient diagnoses, and for other special investigations as determined necessary by the Medical Director.
  • Perform surgery in the operating theater on your team’s assigned days until all scheduled surgery is finished. 
  • Help the other surgery team as necessary, and as work in the outpatient department allows.
  • Perform emergency surgery, or other special long cases, on non-surgery workdays, only as work in the outpatient department allows.
  • Take turns with other staff ophthalmologists for inpatient rounds on Fridays and holidays, as well as
  • Friday evening, and holiday care of emergency patients.    
  • Participate in basic education of medical students during their time at NETC.
  • Participate in all aspects of the ophthalmology resident training program, by providing formal instruction as well as close supervision of resident practice in the outpatient department, wards, and operating theater.
  • Participate in the development and administration of assessment tools for the evaluation of trainees.
  • Participate in the ongoing selection of trainees and development of the training program.
  • Participate in all aspects of hospital management, including supervision of other staff, including junior and trainee ophthalmologists, as NETC policies dictate.
  • Liaison with the Ministry of Health as necessary with reimbursement only by NETC

  • Every experienced employee is responsible to cooperate and train the subordinate staff, OTTP students and other people that are outside the program and coming for training activities as requested.

Job Requirements:

  • Proof of graduation from a medical school and a recognized ophthalmology training program, along with an IAM-NOOR or an equivalent diploma.
  • At least three years of practical experience in eye care following appropriate ophthalmic training, along with one year of experience teaching medical students and ophthalmology residents after completing suitable ophthalmic training.
  • Excellent clinical judgement, diagnostic and surgical skills, as well as thoroughness in all work.
  • Commitment to one’s own continuing medical education and improvement of skills.
  • Commitment and ability to teach ophthalmology resident trainees, medical students, and patients.
  • Leadership skills lending themselves to participation in management of the hospital and its training program.
  • Respect for all people, and ability to work well in a team.
  • Punctuality and reliability.
  • Confidence in dealing with large numbers of people.
  • Reasonable fluency in spoken Dari and Pashto, as well as a working knowledge of written and spoken English.
  • Commitment to hospital policies and medical records documentation.
