Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) is one of the most comprehensive private, not‐for‐profit health care systems in the developing world with community health programs in large geographical areas in Central and South Asia, as well as in East Africa.
The Aga Khan Health Services, Afghanistan (AKHS, A) was established in 2003 as part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). AKHS, A provides health care services mainly on behalf of the government including the Ministry of Public Health’s of Afghanistan’s Basic Package of Health Services (BPHS) and Essential Package of Hospital Services (EPHS). AKHS, A is unique both in scale and scope, delivering critical health services along the continuum of care, from Community Health Workers (CHWs) to ISO certified hospital facilities.
AKHS, A is currently implementing healthcare services in Bamyan, Baghlan, Badakhshan, Kabul and Takhar provinces. The agency’s scope of work includes the provision of primary and secondary healthcare, preventive and curative medical care, Nursing and Midwifery education, Human Resources Development and Hospital Management. As BPHS and EPHS implementer, AKHS, A provides technical support as well as capacity building of health personnel, immunization services, nutrition trainings and the training of Community Health Nurses and Community Health Midwives.
AKHS, A draws on internal and other donor fundings to continue supplementary and complementary support to the national health system. Moreover, AKHS, A has introduced innovations, including, expansions of e-Health services, e-learning initiatives, and cross border arrangements. To promote healthy environment, AKHS, A is also implementing net zero and greenhouse gas emission initiatives.
Responsibilities:
1. Conduct daily ward rounds for support to MDs, observation and review of patients.
2. Run specialist clinics on a regular basis.
3. Regularly monitor patients’ progress and provide documentation.
4. Attend emergency cases when necessary and be on 24 hrs call.
5. Carry out emergency medical procedures.
6. Ensure complete daily documentation of patient case notes/files
7. Ensure complete discharge, referral and feedback procedures for patients
8. Counsel patients and relatives on health management.
9. Maintain regular contacts with heads of other departments to ensure harmonization of patients’ management.
10. Review and develop appropriate policies and procedures for patients’ health care to formulate best practice guidelines based on EPHS.
11. Ensure timely availability of required support services in the process of treating patients, particularly when referred to other specialists.
12. Liaise with other consultants on handling specialized cases in provision of patients’ health care.
13. Prepare timely and accurate medical reports, audits and mortality reviews.
14. Ensure quality procedures and clinical audit implementation.
15. Ensure medical records activities are effectively implemented
16. Perform accurate echocardiography and report timely needed base
17. Perform diagnostic endoscopy procedure needed base
Ensure optimum staff performance with an emphasis on customer service and delivery of quality patient care.
1. Teach other health care providers/MDs about specific techniques of medicine services.
2. Ensure effective management of wards, OPD clinics and other units of relevant clinical departments.
3. Observe and comply with environmental health, occupational safety and Infection Prevention measures and regulations.
4. Play a role in the growth and sustainability of the institution.
5. Create, uphold and promote a positive hospital image.
6. Provide professional guidance to facilitate growth and development of the Doctors and institution.
7. Initiate and participate in clinical research activities.
8. Participate in clinical governance, medical and clinical audit activities.
9. Ensure effective utilization of resources.
To provide overall leadership function for the department.
