January. 1994 is an Afghan, non-profit, non-governmental and non- political organization, cooperative partner of UN and other international organizations implementing developmental and humanitarian projects in the southern region of Afghanistan. OHA strives to contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs) while strictly adhering the humanitarian principles, and key elements of good governance; participation, transparency and accountability. The intention is to alleviate sever suffering, spread awareness, enable people to become self-employed and self-dependent at village, district and city levels for boosting rural and urban economy and livelihood in consultation with donors and local communities.

Job Descriptions:

Job Purpose:

The Food Safety & Nutrition Expert is responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing nutrition-related interventions, household food safety practices, and community awareness initiatives within the TDH Resilience Project in Nimroz. The role strengthens community resilience by improving dietary diversity, safe food handling, child and maternal nutrition, and reducing risks of foodborne illness.

The expert works closely with health workers, mothers, caregivers, community educators, and livelihood teams to integrate nutrition messaging with socio-economic development activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct community-based awareness sessions on nutrition, dietary diversity, maternal and child feeding, micronutrient needs, and healthy eating practices.
  • Educate households on the importance of nutrition during pregnancy, lactation, and early childhood (0–24 months).
  • Provide training on safe food handling, storage, preparation, and contamination prevention.
  • Raise awareness about water safety, kitchen hygiene, washing practices, and prevention of foodborne diseases.
  • Support households in adopting safe food management practices in local cultural contexts.
  • Collaborate with Agriculture and Value Chain Experts to ensure that livelihood and agricultural activities incorporate nutrition-sensitive approaches.
  • Provide guidance on household garden nutrition, nutrient-rich crops, diversification, and basic food processing.
  • Support integration of nutrition messaging in cash-for-livelihoods, income-generation, and resilience-building activities.
  • Develop and deliver training for CHWs, teachers, women facilitators, mother groups, and community volunteers.
  • Prepare culturally appropriate nutrition and food safety materials (visual aids, brochures, simple guides).
  • Build capacity of community structures to sustain nutrition and food safety practices.
  • Collect data on key nutrition indicators, dietary diversity, session attendance, and behavior change outcomes.
  • Provide technical input for project reports, MEAL activities, and field assessments.
  • Document community practices, success stories, challenges, and improvement opportunities.
  • Track improvements in household food safety and nutrition behavior.
  • Coordinate with local health authorities, DoPH, community elders, women groups, and partner organizations.
  • Participate in local health/nutrition clusters or technical working groups when required.
  • Work closely with OHA and TDH’s Protection, Health, Livelihoods, and Peace Education teams to ensure integrated programming.

 

Job Requirements:

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition, Public Health, Food Science, Community Health, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Additional training in food hygiene, IYCF, or nutrition counseling is an asset.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in nutrition, food safety, health education, or community health programming.
  • Experience working with NGOs, INGOs, or health/nutrition projects in Afghanistan.
  • Experience in Nimroz Province is highly desirable.

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of IYCF, maternal and child nutrition, dietary diversity, and malnutrition prevention.
  • Practical understanding of hygiene promotion and food safety standards.
  • Ability to conduct nutrition counseling and community awareness sessions.
  • Understanding of cultural food practices and nutritional challenges in Nimroz.
  • Basic data collection and reporting skills.

Soft Skills

  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and community engagement skills.
  • Ability to build trust with women, caregivers, youth, and vulnerable households.
  • Cultural sensitivity, patience, and empathy.
  • Strong teamwork and problem-solving abilities.
  • Good reporting skills in Dari, Pashto, and basic English.
