RAADA (Rehabilitation Association and Agriculture Development for Afghanistan) is an Afghan NGO dedicated to improving the lives of rural communities through sustainable agriculture, food security, and rehabilitation initiatives. With decades of experience working in the western region of Afghanistan, RAADA has been instrumental in empowering farmers, rebuilding livelihoods, and providing humanitarian aid to vulnerable populations across Afghanistan. Vento di Terra (VDT) is an Italian NGO renowned for its commitment to human rights, social justice, and sustainable development. In Afghanistan, Vento di Terra has focused on building resilient communities through agriculture, livestock, and disaster risk management. Together, RAADA and Vento di Terra have joined forces to implement the Hari Rud: The Flowing River project, funded by AICS. This collaborative initiative aims to support vulnerable families in five districts of Herat Province by enhancing food security, promoting sustainable agriculture and livestock practices, and strengthening community resilience to natural disasters. Through this project, the two organizations bring complementary expertise to create lasting change for the people of Herat.
Job Description
The Veterinary Officer will be responsible for improving livestock health, productivity, and resilience in project communities. The role focuses on disease prevention, treatment, and capacity building to strengthen rural livelihoods against climate change and emergencies. Working closely with farmers, local authorities, and partner organizations, the Veterinary Officer will ensure veterinary services are accessible, inclusive, and aligned with national livestock development strategies.
Responsibilities
- Field Visits and Animal Health Assessment & Analysis
- Conduct field visits to assess livestock health conditions and identify disease risks.
- Carry out diagnostic evaluations and recommend preventive or curative measures.
- Planning & Reporting
- Develop weekly, monthly, and annual veterinary service plans for project areas.
- Prepare and submit timely reports on livestock health, vaccination campaigns, and treatment outcomes to the Project Manager.
- Capacity Building & Training
- Design training materials and deliver sessions for farmers, community groups, and local authorities on animal health, disease prevention, and improved husbandry practices.
- Facilitate workshops and awareness campaigns on zoonotic diseases, vaccination importance, and sustainable livestock management.
- Coordination & Stakeholder Engagement
- Liaise with government veterinary departments, NGOs, and donor partners to align activities with national livestock health strategies.
- Represent the organization in technical forums, coordination meetings, and livestock-related platforms.
- Other Duties
- Perform any other tasks assigned by the Project Management Team.
Job Requirements
- Veterinary faculty graduated
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in veterinary services, livestock health management, or related projects.
- Strong ability to work with government, donors, NGOs, and community-based organizations.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and report-writing skills.
- Proven organizational and time management skills, with capacity to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Familiarity with Afghan livestock systems and institutional environment.
- Fluency in Dari and Pashto; English proficiency preferred.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in livestock health projects in Afghanistan or similar contexts.
- Knowledge of local livestock diseases and community dynamics in target districts.
- Problem-solving, stress management, and facilitation skills.
- Ability to inspire teamwork and influence action
