Job Descriptions:

Job Purpose:

The Communications Manager’s primary role is to lead communications-related activities for International Medical Corps in Afghanistan while creating and implementing the communications strategy, gathering and generating content, exploring visibility opportunities and developing effective communication resources through coordination with different departments.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

• Design the communications and visibility plans and budgets for all active grants.
• Contribute to proposals by designing communications and visibility plans and budgets.
• Manage the communications and visibility budget lines for all active grants.
• Manage the relationships with different colleagues in the country mission and at HQ level.
• Manage a calendar of donor communications deliverables, ensuring that it is accessible to program and communications colleagues.
• Oversee the creation of engaging communications and media materials, such as stories, photos, videos, infographics, newsletters, brochures and other communications products. This will include creating the content and suggesting the communications format for it.
• Participate in public outreach and awareness initiatives, including media relations and outreach (cultivating relationships with reporters, pitching stories, responding to requests, etc.), working closely with field teams.
• Support executive communications efforts, including speeches, talking points and presentations.
• Coordinate with all field teams and work closely with them on all field activities and site visits whenever needed.
• Visit the field sites regularly to gather photos, write success and human-interest stories, working closely with the field teams.
• Coordinate with and manage external vendors, such as agencies and independent filmmakers and photographers.
• Manage the relationships with suppliers, in coordination with the logistics department, including finding new suppliers in the market, raising work orders and requests for quotations, following up on payments and finalizing contracts.
• Manage the archiving of all communications materials.
• Manage the implementation and design of social media plans.
• Update and manage shared folders, including story and photo/video files and country-related fact sheets.
• Ensure consistent branding, in line with donor visibility guidelines.
• Manage the communications-related efforts of other country staff, and coach them on best practices while building their capacity.

As applicable to the position, maintains a clear understanding of International Medical Corps and donor compliance and ethics standards and adheres to those standards. Conducts work with the highest level of integrity

Qualifications:

Essential: Typically, a Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism or another relevant discipline is required.

Desirable: Advanced degree a plus. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Experience:

Typically, 7+ years of relevant and progressive experience working in corporate communications in a dynamic, fast- paced, high-volume work environment.

Competency:

Essential:

- Excellent communication skills (oral & written) in Dari / Pashto / English.
- Ability to work successfully and effectively as part of a team, as well as independently, in a multicultural and participatory environment.
- Solid computer skills, including the Microsoft Office suite. Familiarity with the design and production process.
- Experience working with NGOs working in the humanitarian or development field is desirable.
- Proven experience in people management.
- Excellent copyediting and proofreading skills; able to interpret and simplify technical language to adapt it for a wide range of audiences.
- Excellent research, interviewing and writing skills; adept at writing clean, engaging copy under deadline pressure.

Desirable:

Skills in working on photo and video editing software is a plus.
