HI has been supporting the Afghan people since 1987, starting its operations in Pakistan. Since 1996, HI has been operating across Afghanistan in order to launch victim assistance interventions, working at different levels of the society and adopting a cross-sectoral approach. While present on the ground to directly support victims of the conflict through the provision of a range of services – from physical rehabilitation, to mine risk education and inclusive livelihoods – HI has been continuously advocating to increase the rights of victims and other people with disabilities in the country. In particular, and in line with its global strategy and priorities, HI has been advocating to reduce the use of landmines and conventional weapons. Acknowledging the need to respond to the urgent emergency crises combined with longer term, chronic gaps in the provision of services, HI has steadily expanded its range of activities and services in order to support the most vulnerable people, enhancing their resilience while strengthening participation and inclusion of all individuals.

Job Purpose:

The Handyman/Cleaner works within overall structure of HI and is directly responsible to the purchaser and his proxies for any work conducted. The responsibilities for this position are listed but not limited to as are mentioned below.

Additionally, the Handyman/Cleaner may be required to assist with inventory management of cleaning and other supplies and report any maintenance issues or damages to the relevant authorities.

Job Description

The Duties and responsibilities may include but not limited to: 

• Undertaking maintenance, repairs, construction, plumbing, wiring, carpentry etc. as requested
• When is necessary work replace for guards.
• Supervising daily workers/ laborers under the overall supervision of the Purchaser and his proxies.
• To check general condition of the office and residential fittings and buildings and request work where/when necessary.
• Assisting the guards and cleaners to keep the office and compound free from rubbish, clean and tidy, and ensure that the garden is watered.
• Providing offices with tea and clean drinking water.
• Helping drivers in loading and unloading vehicles.
• Working under the overall supervision of the supervisor to ensure adherence to cleaning standards and procedures.
• To turn on and turn off the generator when required.
• Daily light the office heaters.
• Work under the general supervision of purchaser.
• Write every task on tasks board.
• Make small routine purchases.
• When the cook is busy distribute meal as directed by the purchaser in charge of meal distribution.
• Receiving guests and preparing/taking tea for them.
• Clean office equipment as requested.
• Dealing with small plumbing and electricity jobs.
• Assisting plumber and electrician when required.
• Collect and deliver mail to and from other agencies/offices.
• Assist in making photocopies and deliver to the concerned person.
• Performing any other tasks as requested by purchaser and his proxies.
• Cleaning various office and guesthouse areas as per instructions by Purchaser.
• Monitoring drinking water stock and delivering it to the places required.
• The handyman must always inform the purchaser when his tasks are completed and be available for re-tasking.

Qualifications and Skills:

• At least 3 years of work experience with I/NGOs.
• School graduate · Computing/office technology.
• Functioning of telecommunications equipment.
• Principles of stock management ·
• English language will be an asset.
