Purpose of the Post:
Objectives of the Programme and the immediate Strategic Objective (Overview of the program):
Afghanistan is one of the two endemic countries for Poliovirus. Establishment of direct detection Laboratory will help early detection of virus and action planning. This Lab. will be established in Central Public Health lab (CPHL), Kabul. The overall process and working for Direct Detection Laboratory are under the guiding principle of Global Polio Eradication Initiative, in line with the goal of polio virus eradication.

Role objectives
Summary of Assigned Duties (Describe what the incumbent must do to achieve main objectives; include main achievements expected):
The incumbent will perform the following duties under the Lab. Supervisor.
- Support in installation and smooth running of equipment in poliovirus direct detection laboratory.
- Preparation of work plan for laboratory testing of samples under management of supervisor for suspected poliovirus cases as per WHO guideline.
- Receive, register, and log record of stool collected for poliovirus testing.
- Preparation of reagents required for the processing of samples.
- Processing of Stool samples received in the laboratory.
- Perform poliovirus diagnostic PCR for detection and identification of Poliovirus.
- Maintain register for the record of original samples received, tested, and stored.
- Enter, maintain, and analyze data in electronic database.
- Documentation of all laboratory procedures ensuring that the biosafety and laboratory quality guidelines are implemented.
- Maintenance of the equipment routinely used in laboratories with their validation and certification records.
- Following biosafety and security guidelines and procedures safely discard the polio laboratory waste.
- Maintenance of laboratory Quality Control procedures
- Report and record laboratory incidents including infectious spills, leakage, etc. to supervisor.
- Keeping all polio laboratory supplies record updated and keep supervisor posted.
- Prepare and submit the monthly technical activity report to the supervisor.
- Feedback on technical issues and report writing.
- Undertake other relevant duties as directed by the supervisor.
Deliverables:
- Testing of biological samples for direct detection of poliovirus and sharing of results timely manner with the relevant department.
- Instruments are maintained and calibrated periodically.
- Ensure Quality control and quality assurance procedures.
- Inventory management.
- Contingency planning for smooth lab functioning
- Data management
- Preparing laboratory demands and needs on yearly basis.
- Other assigned tasks are performed.
Key competencies
Qualifications Required:
- B.Sc. degree in Medical Laboratory Technology/ Microbiology / Biotechnology / Virology.
- Computer skills (MS-office in must).
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Excellent personal time management skill.

Functional Skills and Knowledge:
Experience:
3-5 years’ experience of working in a laboratory diagnosis particularly in Real time PCR diagnostic laboratory.
Educations:
B.Sc. degree in Medical Laboratory Technology/ Microbiology / Biotechnology / Virology.
Languages: Very good working knowledge of English and the local languages.
