About ALO

Afghan Literacy Organization is a registered non for profit, non‐political and non‐governmental organization working for development and transformation of civil society in Afghanistan. ALO was established in August 1995 and registered with Ministry of Economy to response the need of vulnerable Afghan refugees and internally displaced families at the time of civil and factional fighting following Soviet Union’s invasion of the country and troops withdrawal in early 1990’s. ALO is established to work for Afghan Communities in the fields of Education, basic health care, gender, human rights, capacity building, and income generating activities and rehabilitation as well as emergency operations like food distribution targeting the most vulnerable Afghan people

Scope of work: 

The  Proposal Writing & Grants Manager at ALO is responsible for securing funding through grant proposals, donor engagement, and fundraising initiatives. This role requires strong writing skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to build relationships with institutional donors, development partners, and private sector sponsors. The position will ensure ALO’s financial sustainability by identifying funding opportunities and developing compelling proposals aligned with the organization’s mission.

Main Responsibilities:

Grants & Proposal Development

• Research and identify funding opportunities, including grants, RFPs, and donor solicitations.
• Develop high-quality grant proposals, concept notes, and funding applications.
• Collaborate with program, finance, and M&E teams to gather technical inputs, budgets, and sustainability strategies.
• Ensure compliance with donor guidelines, submission requirements, and organizational standards.
• Maintain a database of past proposals, donor requirements, and funding trends.

Fundraising & Business Development

• Develop and implement a fundraising strategy to diversify ALO’s funding sources (grants, partnerships, sponsorships, and individual donors).
• Organize fundraising campaigns, donor events, and online giving initiatives.
• Identify and engage with new donors, foundations, and private-sector partners to expand funding streams.
• Represent ALO in donor meetings, funding forums, and networking events.

Donor & Stakeholder Engagement

• Build and maintain strong relationships with donors, funding agencies, and development partners.
• Develop a donor engagement strategy and maintain a donor database with key contacts and funding timelines.
• Prepare donor reports, presentations, and updates on ALO’s impact and funding needs.

Capacity Building & Internal Coordination

• Train and mentor ALO staff on grant writing, donor engagement, and fundraising strategies.
• Work closely with program, finance, and communications teams to ensure alignment of proposals with ALO’s strategic goals.

Monitor and evaluate fundraising efforts to improve success rates and funding impact.

Qualifications & Requirements:

Education: Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Business Administration, International Development, Communications, Public Administration  or its related field.

Experience: Minimum 5-7 years of experience in grant writing, fundraising, or business development for NGOs.
