Over the past few years, Afghanistan has witnessed a relative improvement in security and stability across much of the country. This has allowed humanitarian actors like INTERSOS to maintain uninterrupted access and expand services in areas that were previously hard to reach. Despite this progress, the humanitarian situation remains critical, with millions of Afghans continuing to face acute vulnerabilities due to prolonged economic hardship, natural disasters, and limited access to essential services.
In 2025, more than half of the population is in need of humanitarian assistance, with food insecurity, child malnutrition, and displacement remaining key concerns. Natural disasters, such as floods and recent earthquakes, have further compounded the needs of already struggling communities.
INTERSOS continues to operate through a community-based approach with field bases in Kabul, Kandahar, and Zabul, delivering primary healthcare, nutrition, and protection services with a focus on women, children, and persons with disabilities. The organization enjoys strong community acceptance and collaborates closely with relevant national authorities, including maintaining the full participation of female staff in all activities.
While the operational environment is largely stable and conducive, funding shortfalls and systemic barriers such as restrictions on financial flows and administrative bottlenecks continue to impact the scope and scale of humanitarian response. Sustained support is crucial to ensure the continuity of life-saving services and to address the urgent needs of Afghanistan’s most vulnerable populations.
The purpose is to establish and broadly support the resilience and well-being of vulnerable children and young people through structured activities conducted in a safe, child-friendly, and stimulating environment known as Child Care Centres. Children in CCCs through (protection, health, and nutrition) facilities will be offered child-friendly activities like painting, drawing, storytelling, singing, fun, and sports, teaching them child rights and child protection in an age-appropriate manner, along with hand washing activities to promote hygiene of the children.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Supervise and provide vulnerable children with recreational (e.g. free and organized play, sports, traditional and modern games, etc.) and educational (non-formal educational activities, pre-school, drawing/painting, etc.) activities in a safe Child Care Center.
· Ensure a variety of structured games and activities within the CCC, catering to the needs of children of different ages, genders and abilities.
· Draw a calendar of activities for the children to be followed by topic and by week. A daily/weekly activity schedule should include free time, recreation, expressive activities like, drawing and time for small group/large group activities.
· Plan activities based on age of the beneficiaries (e.g. morning activities should be conducted for pre-school children aged 3 to 10 in an age appropriate and gender sensitive manner).
· Plan activities for the coming week with a variety of programmes and activities for each age group, that engages girls’ active participation. Post the activity schedule at the beginning of each week so children know what to expect.
· Promote equal participation by boys and girls.
· Ensure a safe and child-friendly atmosphere within the CCC, and that no physical discipline or fighting occurs.
· Ensure that children’s participation is considered in the development of the CCC and its activities.
· Ensure that all games and equipment are accounted for and stored securely at the end of the day. Maintain an inventory of all things in the CCC and check the records weekly and submit to the supervisor
· Ensure that children will be safe going to and from the CCC.
· Screen for and monitor protection needs and gaps in and around the CCC.
· Conduct a visual assessment of the children every day to check for possible protection concerns and/or identify children who are malnourished, or who have health or psychosocial risks. When necessary, refer to case workers or report to supervisor.
· Take accurate attendance every day.
· Follow up with children who are not coming to sessions.
· Ensure that children have regular breaks so they can drink water and go to the toilet.
· Ensure that water is delivered regularly, that there is enough for all children attending, and that it is safe to drink.
