Humanitarian Assistance Society (HAS) is a non- profit, non-political, and non-governmental organization. It is registered with the Ministry of Economy under license # 5824, HAS works to support the struggle against poverty, hunger, and social injustice. We work in a variety of sectors including health and nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), good governance, capacity building, social justice awareness-raising, advocacy, and human rights promotion and protection. HAS has been helping vulnerable Afghan communities since 2005 through launching different interventions in more than 30 provinces of Afghanistan.
1. Overall Purpose / Objective
The Nutrition Nurse is responsible for providing clinical and nutritional support services to children under five years, pregnant and lactating women (PLWs) and other targeted groups. The role includes assessment, treatment, referral, counseling, follow-up, data management, logistics, and community linkage, in accordance with national guidelines (such as IMAM, IMNCI, IYCF) and organizational protocols.
2. Key Responsibilities / Duties
A. Screening & Assessment
Screen children under five and PLWs for acute malnutrition using MUAC, weight, height, and other anthropometric measurements.
Conduct appetite tests to determine eligibility for therapeutic feeding programs.
Take medical/nutritional history and perform physical examinations to detect co-morbidities or complications.
B. Treatment & Case Management
Admit eligible beneficiaries into nutrition programs (OPD-SAM, OPD-MAM, or inpatient) as per national protocols.
Monitor clinical condition, provide necessary medical or nutritional interventions, and manage complications or refer cases when needed.
Implement discharge procedures when criteria are met.
Ensure follow-up visits for admitted cases and track non-responders or defaulters.
C. Nutrition & Health Education / Counseling
Provide IYCF counseling to mothers/caregivers and educate on optimal feeding, hygiene, and caring practices.
Deliver group or individual health and nutrition education sessions.
Demonstrate food preparation / cooking methods using locally available foods.
D. Record Keeping, Reporting & Data Management
Maintain accurate records (treatment cards, registers, tally sheets, logs).
Compile and submit daily, weekly, and monthly reports of nutrition activities, including admissions, discharges, stock consumption, and program indicators.
Assist in data quality checks and ensure consistency in reporting.
E. Logistics, Supply & Inventory Management
Ensure safe storage, handling, and proper use of nutrition supplies (RUTF, RUSF, medicines, equipment).
Monitor stock levels, submit requisitions, and prevent stock-outs.
Manage inventory movements and consumption reporting.
F. Coordination & Community Engagement
Coordinate with community health workers, volunteers, and other stakeholders to trace defaulters, follow up cases, and ensure referrals.
Contribute to outreach / mobile nutrition teams planning and implementation.
Participate in coordination meetings with health authorities, NGOs, and local partners.
G. Quality Assurance, Capacity Building & Compliance
Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), national and organizational nutrition and health guidelines.
Conduct on-the-job training, orientation, and supervision of junior staff, health assistants, volunteers.
Participate in internal audits, supervision visits, and quality assurance activities.
Ensure adherence to infection prevention, hygiene, and safety standards.
H. Other Duties
Perform any additional tasks assigned by the supervisor, manager, or project leadership to support the health and nutrition program.
Education:
Diploma in Nursing or Midwifery (required).
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Public Health, or Nutrition is an advantage.
Valid Nursing License or Certification (as per national regulations).
Experience:
Minimum 2 to 3 years of relevant work experience in clinical nursing or nutrition programs.
Prior experience in IMAM, CMAM, IYCF, or similar community-based nutrition programs is preferred.
Experience working in humanitarian or NGO settings is an asset.
Technical Skills:
Knowledge of national nutrition protocols, including treatment of SAM/MAM and IYCF counseling.
Familiarity with anthropometric measurements (MUAC, weight, height).
Basic medical care and case management skills.
Data collection and reporting (treatment cards, tally sheets, registers).
Language:
Fluency in Dari and/or Pashto (spoken and written).
Basic working knowledge of English is preferred.
Computer Skills:
Ability to use MS Office (Word, Excel).
Familiarity with mobile data collection tools (e.g. Kobo, ODK) is an asset.
