Job Description
The Clinical Mentor is responsible for strengthening the quality, safety, and effectiveness of health services provided to pregnant women, newborns, and children under the BPHS SAFE Project in Kandahar Province. The role focuses on advanced clinical mentoring, capacity building, and supportive supervision of health workers. The position also leads the implementation of Quality Improvement (QI) initiatives and Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR), ensuring continuous improvement in service delivery across health facilities up to the district hospital level.
Specific Responsibilities:
1. Advanced Clinical Mentorship
- Provide high-level, specialized clinical mentoring and coaching to doctors, midwives, and nurses in maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH).
- Strengthen the clinical decision-making and management of complicated obstetric and neonatal cases.
- Lead on-the-job training sessions, clinical demonstrations, and case reviews to enhance staff competencies.
- Support the management of obstetric emergencies, neonatal resuscitation, preterm care, and complications, including birth asphyxia and infections.
- Ensure proper and effective use of medical equipment such as ultrasound machines, incubators, and neonatal care units.
2. Quality Improvement (QI) Leadership
- Lead the implementation of Quality Improvement (QI) initiatives in all BPHS SAFE project health facilities using standardized tools (e.g., HQIP).
- Establish, mentor, and monitor QI committees at the facility level and ensure effective functionality.
- Conduct comprehensive facility assessments, identify gaps, and lead root cause analysis processes.
- Develop and oversee implementation of evidence-based action plans to improve service quality.
- Ensure adherence to national clinical standards, protocols, and guidelines.
3. MPDSR Strengthening
- Lead and strengthen Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) systems across supported facilities.
- Facilitate maternal and perinatal death reviews and ensure proper documentation and follow-up actions.
- Analyze trends and provide technical guidance for preventive measures.
- Promote data-driven decision-making through regular feedback and dissemination of findings.
4. Supportive Supervision and Monitoring
- Conduct regular, structured supportive supervision visits to all assigned health facilities.
- Evaluate staff performance and competencies using standardized clinical checklists.
- Provide targeted mentoring and corrective actions based on identified gaps.
- Prepare and submit high-quality monthly and quarterly supervision reports with clear recommendations.
5. Coordination and Technical Collaboration
- Work closely with AAIWO, provincial health authorities, and other partners for integrated planning and implementation.
- Participate in provincial technical working groups and coordination meetings.
- Strengthen referral systems and linkages between community and facility-based services.
6. Service Delivery Enhancement
- Improve the quality and accessibility of antenatal, delivery, postnatal, and child health services.
- Provide specialized support for high-risk pregnancies and complicated neonatal cases.
- Strengthen management of newborn infections, nutrition, growth monitoring, and early childhood development.
- Promote best practices and facilitate knowledge sharing across health facilities.
7. Reporting and Documentation
- Ensure timely preparation and submission of technical reports to project and provincial management.
- Document mentoring activities, clinical outcomes, and quality improvement achievements.
- Develop and share case studies, lessons learned, and success stories.
- Perform any additional duties assigned by provincial management relevant to the role.
Job Requirements
- Female Medical Doctor (MD) with specialization in one of the following fields:
- Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Pediatrics / Neonatology
- Family Medicine (with strong MNCH experience)
- Minimum 3–5 years of relevant experience in MNCH, preferably within BPHS/EPHS programs.
- Proven experience in clinical mentoring, supportive supervision, and capacity building.
- Strong knowledge of national clinical guidelines, QI approaches, and MPDSR.
- Excellent communication, facilitation, and report writing skills.
- Ability to travel frequently to health facilities within the province.
