Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) is an international, non-profitable, non-governmental humanitarian relief organization with its head quarter in Birmingham, UK. It enjoys consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations and is a signatory to the Code of Conduct for International Red Cross and red Crescent Moments and NGOs in Disaster Relief. Islamic Relief has been working in Afghanistan for more than 23 years, providing emergency relief and implementing life-changing development projects for some of the most vulnerable people in the country. Islamic Relief set up our first Afghanistan office in 1999. Since then, IRA continued providing assistances in emergency relief, food security, livelihood, education, health, nutrition, shelter, orphan sponsorship, Ramadan and Qurbani programmes.

Job Summary

This position is responsible for ensuring the safe drinking water and information about water contamination in target communities through strong coordination with WASH team

Duties & Responsibilities

• Established & maintain a mobile / static water quality testing facility (lab) at the Islamic Relief office
• Plan and execute over all site wise environmental feasibility
• Site assessment and Monitoring for Hazardous risk for water contamination and define options to protect communities
• Support Health & Hygiene workers in preparing WaSH and health related soft interventions and, guide them some basic key wash intervention in order to educate communities on the protection of safe water, storage, prevent open free defecation and healthy hygiene behaviour.
• Collection of Water Samples from the Water supplies Sources and Storage Tanks for test of physical, chemical, and biological parameters and compare the result with WHO standards.; Ensure to test other key parameters such as Arsenic, Fluoride, Magnesium etc. at all sites.
•  Chlorination and disinfection of water sources at the time of new installation repair rehabilitation phase and the disinfection of water lines 
•  Prepared monthly work plans and submission the monthly water quality report to the WASH Project Engineer
•  Work closely with capacity building and Hygiene promotion team, creating awareness among the community about different health hygiene issue i.e. proper care and maintenance of drinking water sources, Hand washing, storing and using water efficiently, communicable disease.(microbes)etc. 
• Plan and organize water testing trainings, Environmental health etc to the Program and field staff.
•  Assist the Project lead in different questionnaire formation, data handling and program monthly reporting.
• Work closely with the project lead and logistic team to ensure all supply request related to the project activities are done timely and according to the procedures.
• Manage relevant project activities in the targeted areas.
• In coordination with field staff ensures timely implementation of the activities at field level.
• Documentation and reporting of progress, challenges, and learning for future implementation for similar projects and accountability.
• On need basis, also, support IT other field offices / country office in his areas of expertise
• Technical support Country Program team in defining new Concepts notes and Proposals as and when required.
• Will also be deployed to all IR Afghanistan field offices as per need to support WASH Programs

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications (Bullet Points)

• Masters in environmental sciences or relevant field
• Good understanding of water borne diseases
• Social mobilization through mobilization team traditional water protection techniques
• Various training events of efficient techniques for different water supply schemes with mobilizer
• Fully understand different intervention of water quality surveillance
• Good interpersonal skill

Experience (Bullet Points)

• 3-5 years of relevant experience in water quality analysis preferred in INGO
• Proven experience of Water Testing/analysis.

Desirable:

• Relevant experience of working with humanitarian/development sector/INGOs.
