Turquoise Mountain is a non-profit, non-governmental organization specializing in urban regeneration, business development, and education in traditional arts and architecture. We seek to provide education, skills and livelihoods to Afghan men and women. Since 2006 Turquoise Mountain has cleared 45,000 cubic meters of rubbish from the streets, restored or built 150 historic and community buildings, created a primary school and a clinic, and installed water, electricity, and sanitation through the historic traditional craft neighborhood of Murad Khani in the old city of Kabul. It has created the internationally accredited Institute for Afghan Arts & Architecture, training the next generation of craftsmen and women in woodwork, jewelry and gem cutting, calligraphy and miniature painting, and ceramics. Finally, it has sold over US$15,000,000 of Afghan artisan products internationally.

Job Summary

The Carpenter will support the supervisor in executing various carpentry tasks, including reading blueprints, taking measurements, and performing installations. This role involves constructing, repairing, and refurbishing wooden structures, ensuring high-quality workmanship mostly in historical settings.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Assisting supervisor to read blueprints, drawings and sketches to fully grasp requirements.
• Take measurements and calculate the size and amount of material needed.
• Use equipment and tools to safely perform basic construction tasks.
• Skirting boards fitting of the rooms and halls.
• Staircase repair and refurbishment for any kind of buildings.
• To build all kind of shelfs including bookshelf.
• To build partition walls and perform its installation.
• Paneling for walls, doors, and windows.
• To build and install wooden ceiling in modern and historical shapes.
• Design and install wooden pata-ee screen windows (historical).
• Adding fixtures and fittings such as door handles, locks, hinges and closures.
• Installation of timber wood for floor.

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
• Formal training or apprenticeship in carpentry is an advantage.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in basic carpentry work and construction tasks,heritage experienced is preferred.

Skills and Competencies:

• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and sketches.
• Proficient in measuring and calculating material requirements.
• Skilled in using basic carpentry tools and equipment safely and efficiently.
• Experience in fitting skirting boards, repairing staircases, and refurbishing buildings.
• Competence in building and installing various wooden structures, including shelves, partition walls, and ceilings.
• Ability to design and install historical wooden elements such as wooden screen windows and other traditional structures.
• Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy materials, standing for extended periods, and working in various weather conditions.
