The IRC opened the country program in Afghanistan in 1988. The IRC works in 10 provinces throughout Afghanistan, among which some of the most security volatile, and employs over 1000 staff.

Job Descriptions:

General Duties

  • Plan and ensure the strategic building and management of Safe Healing and Learning Spaces (SHLS) in accordance with best practices and IRC policy
  • Supervise and provide regular training support to the SHLS Team Leader and SHLS community-based facilitators
  • Ensure safe and effective implementation of SHLS activities such as social-emotional learning and parenting skills intervention
  • Ensure that children harmed or at risk of being harmed are identified and have access to services through child protection referrals. Ensure that Team Leader and SHLS facilitators are trained and are able to identify referral needs, make and follow-up on referrals. Coordinate with Case Management Officer and Community Based Protection Officer as needed.
  • Support and follow-up on children who discontinue SHLS, including facilitation of children’s enrollment and integration into public school systems.
  • Work with communities and local leadership to ensure that SHLS programming targets the most vulnerable children of the community, such as children engaged in child labor, unaccompanied and separated children (UASC), children out of school, children at risk of early marriage, and children at risk of or who experienced abuse or neglect.
  • Receive referrals of children for SHLS programming through Community Based Protection Committees, local service providers, and child protection teams
  • Ensure gender balance in children accessing SHLS to ensure that boys and girls have equal opportunities to participate in SHLS activities.
  • Contribute to creation and dissemination of key protection messages on child rights and wellbeing. Support community based awareness through information sessions that sensitize communities on child protection risks.
  • Ensure that all activities are carried out in accordance with child protection standards, including do no harm, informed consent, taking into account the best interest of the child, and ensuring that the SHLS environment is a safe space conducive to children’s healthy development and well-being.
  • Proactively monitor child protection risks in communities and provide feedback and recommendations for programming and advocacy related considerations to Sn. CP Officer and Child Protection Manager
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor to enable and develop IRC programs

Job Requirements:

  • Education:
  •  Bachelor degree in a relevant field (e.g. social work, sociology, psychology, law) 
  • Years of Experience: 2 to 2 years of relevant experience, professional technical experience, including 1 year implementing humanitarian protection programs in emergency/conflict contexts Experience in regular report writing. Experience with protection monitoring and case management preferred.
  • Skills: Good communication skills including ability to gain trust and build relationships with new communities
  • Technical Competency: Experience in designing and implementing surveys or assessments preferred
  • Communication and reporting skills
  • Fluency in Pashto, Dari and English: High standard of spoken and written Dari and Pashto (depending on location) and English
  • Computer skills (including MS Word, Excel, Access, and internet) an advantage
  • Ability to work closely, professionally, and constructively with all others regardless of nationality, ethnicity, gender, religion, race, tribe, or cultural background
