Background

Salam Afghanistan Media Organization (SAMO) is the parent organization to Salam Watandar (SW) Radio Kabul (98.9FM), Salam Watandar Radio Network, SAMO Research, Evaluations and Learning (REL) center, SW News Agency (www.swn.af), Professional Media and Communications Training Hub, and SAMO Professional Technical Workshop on Media and ICTs.    

Established in 2003, SAMO has been one of the nation’s leading media organizations operating in all provinces of Afghanistan through more than 70 partner stations reaching over 22 million people across the country.  The organization has undertaken various multi-media outreach, awareness, and advocacy collaborative partnerships to support the international partners of Afghanistan including UN agencies, international organizations, embassies, private sector, and government media needs.   

SAMO’s Mission: 

SAMO is a multi-media platform that reaches out to Afghans, nationwide. The organization has a multi-pronged approach – i.e. radio, TV, print, and social media – to generate debates around issues of importance to the people of Afghanistan and stir debates/engagement around them so as to ensure citizens remain informed and make informed decisions on issues and matters which affect them.

Job Descriptions:

Job Summary:

Performs activities in the radio Program/News, studio, and writes reports in Dari and Pashto, and Uzbeki languages, News correspondents, News writers, columnists, and newscasters. Ability to work for various media organizations, including newspapers and radio stations. The interns will research topics that they have been assigned to inform the public about News and event taking place.

Program/News:   

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assess leads and pitch captivating story ideas to editors.
  • Review and edit work for editorial approval.
  • Use all your findings to prepare clean, concise, and factual articles
  • Adhere to the ethical code of the profession
  • Keep records of all notes, interviews, and audio files
  • Keep up-to-date on the latest news developments by attending events, studying different papers, opinion pieces, and social media
  • Conduct research to uncover interesting and significant news
  • Interview key persons (witnesses, sources, etc.) to obtain more information
  • Use findings to construct a well-written article
  • Partner with other journalists, editors, producers, etc
  • Establish contacts and sources for use in future research
  • Keep abreast of developments by studying papers, attending events, etc
  • Any other task assigned by the supervisor

 

Studio:    

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Operating and maintaining studio equipment.
  • Handling all live and pre-recorded output
  • Enriching music archive of Salam Watandar
  • Providing technical support for studio operation to Salam Watandar staff
  • Able to act as a live program presenter when required
  • Ensuring that radio spots are broadcast in a timely fashion
  • Recording of daily programs
  • Perform Any other tasks and duties as assigned by the supervisor

 

Uzbeki:

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Translation of Dari & Pashtu reports into the Uzbek language on a daily basis.
  • Assist in editing Uzbek language reports.
  • Assist in anchoring Uzbek language news.
  • Assist to be able to gather news reports.
  • Support the senior Uzbeki editor in editing all text and writing it in an exciting and appealing manner
  • Uploading material to the SW website
  • Make sure the site content is kept up to date
  • Sourcing images and artwork, and commissioning photographers/ Journalists
  • Attend daily meetings and staff meetings to keep abreast of the latest developments of other colleagues
  • Required to work on off days based on the schedule prepared by Chief Editor.
  • Well aware of the media laws in Afghanistan and ensuring to operate within their boundary;
  • Perform any other relevant duties and tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

 

Job Requirements:

  • Fresh graduated female students or students from accredited universities in their last year of university from Journalism faculty, Dari/Pashto Literature, or any other social sciences.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken Dari, Pashto, and other local languages is required.
  • Must cooperate with other programs of Salam Watandar when needed
  • Able to multitask and prioritize work schedules
  • Computer literate and possess good typing skills
  • Able to work on their own or in a team
  • Able to work to tight deadlines  
  • Critical thinking, professionalism, dependability, good work ethic
