About Aga Khan Cultural Services - Afghanistan (AKCS-A):

The AKTC was founded in 1988 and is registered in Geneva, Switzerland, as a private, non-denominational, philanthropic foundation. It is an integral part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a family of institutions created by His Highness the Aga Khan, with distinct yet complementary mandates to improve the welfare and prospects of people in countries in the developing world, particularly in Asia and Africa. AKTC is currently operating in Afghanistan under the name of Aga Khan Cultural Services – Afghanistan (AKCS-A) and is registered with the country's Ministry of Economy.

Part of the wider development programme of the AKDN in Afghanistan, the AKCS-A has since 2002 been engaged in a range of initiatives in Kabul, Heart, Balkh, Badakhshan, Logar, and Ghazni aimed at the conservation and revitalization of historic neighborhoods, the improvement of living conditions, and the development of professional and crafts skills.

Job Descriptions:

General Function:

AKCS-A is implementing several projects in Afghanistan aimed at protecting Afghanistan’s tangible/intangible cultural heritage and improving the living conditions of the inhabitants, as part of a broader process of urban revitalization.  Working within a team of Afghan and international professionals, under the direct supervision of the Operations Manager or his designate, the Driver will be involved in a range of driving and transportation activities in support of AKCS-A’s conservation and rehabilitation activities in Afghanistan.

 

Purpose of the Job:

The Driver will ensure the safe and timely transportation of passengers and goods while maintaining the assigned vehicle in excellent condition. The position also involves supporting operational and logistical tasks as required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Driving and Transport:
  • To operate the assigned vehicles safely, considering the local traffic laws and organizational safety, security, and operational procedures.
  • Transport personnel, visitors, and goods to designated locations and project sites.
  • Ensure punctuality and adherence to scheduled missions and journeys.
  • Assist personnel with loading and unloading luggage or equipment.

 

  1. Vehicle Maintenance:
  • Conduct daily checks of fuel, oil, water, tires, brakes, and general vehicle condition.
  • Keep the vehicle clean (interior and exterior) at all times and in operational condition.
  • Report any mechanical issues or damage immediately to the supervisor.
  • Ensure timely service and repair of the vehicle.
  • Ensure the vehicle is always ready for use and deployment.

 

  1. Logbook and Documentation:
  • Maintain accurate vehicle logbooks (mileage, fuel consumption, trips, and maintenance records).
  •  Ensure valid registration, road permits, and other necessary documents are always available in the vehicle.

 

  1. Safety and Security:
  • Comply with all road safety regulations and organizational security guidelines.
  • Follow designated routes and report any security and safety incidents immediately.
  • Follow the safety procedure and ensure that all travelers and/or goods are transported to the designated location safely.

 

  1. Operational Support:
  • Assist in loading, unloading, and delivery of goods or supplies when necessary.
  • Provide logistical support for events, workshops, and missions as required.

 

  1. Working Conditions:
  • The position requires frequent travel within AKCS-A’s Operational areas and provinces.
  • May require working beyond normal working hours, including weekends and holidays.

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum of high school education (Grade 12 preferred).
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional driving experience, preferably with NGOs, UN agencies, or national organizations.
  • To have a valid Afghanistan driving license. Experience with driving a B6 vehicle is prefered.
  • Skills:
    • Knowledge of road networks.
    • Basic vehicle maintenance and troubleshooting skills.
    • Good communication skills in Dari and Pashto, will have good communication abilities in English.
  • Personal Attributes:
    • High level of integrity and responsibility.
    • Punctual, polite, and professional. Ability to work under pressure and in challenging and multicultural environments.
