Job Descriptions:

General Responsibilities:

  • Provide professional nursing care for neonates in the NICU according to established standards and protocols.
  • Deliver physical, psychological, social, and spiritual support to patients.
  • Establish trust and effective communication with patients and their families.
  • Maintain hospital discipline, ethics, and confidentiality.
  • Educate and inform patients and their families regarding care plans and procedures.
  • Adhere to infection prevention and daily nursing care standards.
  • Administer medication, monitor vital signs, perform dressing changes, catheter care, dietary management, and intake/output documentation.
  • Conduct assessments (height, weight, consciousness levels: GCS/AVPU) as instructed by the physician.
  • Notify physicians of any changes in patient condition and ensure lab tests are done and reported in a timely manner.
  • Ensure cleanliness and readiness of patient beds and rooms, in cooperation with housekeeping staff.
  • Maintain accurate documentation in patient files and submit them to supervisors.
  • Ensure smooth patient handover between shifts and departments.
  • Collaborate with fellow nurses and actively participate in daily reports, medical rounds, and professional nursing conferences.
  • Submit any problems, complaints, suggestions, or needs to the immediate supervisor.
  • Perform CPR and assist in respiratory care procedures such as suctioning, oxygen therapy, tracheostomy care, and chest physiotherapy.
  • Monitor patients on ventilators, including ABG control 10-30 minutes after any changes in ventilator parameters.
  • Provide care for intubated patients and maintain airway safety.
  • Monitor eye care in unconscious patients and those with reflex loss.
  • Provide neonatal care for patients requiring phototherapy, incubators, and infant warmers.
  • Record all nursing interventions and actions in the relevant documentation.
  • Assist in handling critically ill or deceased patients according to hospital protocols.
  • Carry out any additional nursing duties assigned by hospital management in line with laws, regulations, and organizational goals.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with patients and healthcare teams.
  • Time management and ability to handle responsibilities under pressure.
  • Computer literacy relevant to the job (e.g., electronic documentation).
  • Practical knowledge of infection prevention protocols and hygiene standards.
  • Ability to conduct neonatal and critical care procedures (e.g., IV administration, catheterization, suctioning, intake/output monitoring, ventilator management).
  • Experience with emergency response (e.g., CPR, ABG monitoring).
  • Ability to educate and support patients and families.
  • Attention to detail in maintaining patient records and treatment documentation.
  • Flexibility and teamwork skills, with readiness to support other nurses when needed.

Job Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid nursing degree approved by the Ministry of Public Health.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in nursing, specifically related to NICU or relevant departments.
  • Proficiency in one of the official languages of the country (Pashto or Dari); fluency in both is preferred.
  • English language proficiency is an advantage.
  • Ability to adhere to duty schedules and hospital policies.
  • Capability to implement professional standards of nursing care in accordance with physician instructions.
  • Understanding of ethical standards, including respectful patient interaction, confidentiality, and professionalism.
