CRS Afghanistan focuses on poverty and risk reduction and promoting resilience, human development through implementing livelihoods, education and emergency response.

Note: 6-10 Positions (All selected candidates will serve as part of the pool as per the operational needs)

Job Descriptions:

As part of a pool of drivers/interpreters, you will be responsible for providing safe, reliable movement and communications in-city and between provinces, through movement, safety management, accurate translation and interpretation. This role requires strong defensive driving skills, risk management, high language proficiency (fluency in English, Dari and Pashtu, strong cultural awareness, and the ability to accompany CRS staff and visitors with travel and communication needs.

This position is not a traditional full-time or part-time role. Instead, it will operate under an on-call contract arrangement, meaning work will be assigned as needed rather than on a fixed schedule. Therefore, it requires flexibility, as assignments may vary in frequency and duration based on operational requirements and compensation will be provided against the actual days worked.

Roles and Key Responsibilities:

  • Movement:
  • Accompany CRS staff and visitors to target in-city and inter-province destinations using the appropriate routes drawing on a solid understanding of available access routes
  • Follow all traffic laws, safety regulations, and CRS driving policies using defensive driving skills
  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness, conduct routine inspections, and basic maintenance (fueling, checking oil, tires, etc.) to ensure vehicles are consistently road worthy
  • Maintain detailed records of mileage, routes, fuel consumption, and trip logs
  • Report vehicle issues, manage travel related security accidents, or report delays immediately
  • Assist passengers with loading/unloading luggage or materials as needed
  • Assist in scheduling travel routes and planning logistics for field visits or meetings
  • Communicate any schedule changes, delays, or concerns to relevant team members
  • Interpretation:
  • Provide translation/interpretation during travel and site visits, as needed, including with partners and other external audiences
  • Maintain discretion, confidentiality and professionalism throughout assignments
  • Administrative:
  • Support coordination between departments, partners, or clients during transportation and translation tasks
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor including running errands

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to speak fluently and professionally in Pashto, Dari and English
  • Minimum 2-3 years of professional driving experience
  • Valid driving license with a clean driving record
  • High school diploma (university certificate is an advantage)
  • Demonstrated strong defensive driving skills: ability to control a vehicle as safely as possible in the light of geographical and weather conditions
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with in inter-cultural environments
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions under critical circumstances
  • Ability to abreast of new skills to work independently or with limited supervision

  • Internal: CRS staff
  • External: partners, community members, visitors

Required Languages:

  • Fluent Pashto/Dari
  • Good command of English

 Skills & Competencies

  • Must be in good physical and health and present in a professional manner at all times
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent navigation skills and familiarity with local routes, most importantly in Kabul city and multiple provinces
  • Able to navigate Google maps to facilitate the travels when or as needed
  • Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure
  • High level of punctuality, responsibility, and trustworthiness
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate cultural sensitivity
  • Knowledge of vehicle maintenance

Working Conditions:

  • Work may involve driving for extended periods while on travel out of duty station
  • Willing to work weekends, evenings and nights on a rotational basis under a planned shift system
  • Willing to travel countrywide for 1-2 week periods
  • Role will require travel to remote areas with irregular working hours
