The Environmental Protection Trainings and Development Organization (EPTDO) is a well-recognized climate change focused NGO, operating in all provinces of Afghanistan. This organization is led by a team of specialists in climate change, agriculture, and water—many of whom hold PhDs from various countries.

The EPTDO primary focus areas include climate change adaptation and mitigation, as well as disaster risk reduction (DRR) and Waste Management. Our vision, mission and thematic areas of function are aligning with the core principles of the United Nations, and we are proud to be the only accredited NGO in Afghanistan by the UNFCCC, UNEP, UNCCD, GEF-CSOs Network and the UN established CLIMATE CHARTER. This accreditation allowing us to participate in the United Nations international conference in the world. In our participation, we advocate for the climate actions and we raise awareness of the people about the vulnerability of Afghanistan. 

We have successfully participated in several UN-COP conferences, including COP27, COP28, COP29, and COP16-UNCCD, underscores our commitment to global dialogues. We are currently preparing for COP30, which will take place in Brazil, with the aim of collaborating on international commitments, raising awareness about Afghanistan's climate challenges, and advocating for urgent climate action.

In 2019, a group of male and female experts, activists and dedicated youths established the EPTDO and a volunteer network for climate actions. In 2020 the EPTDO was officially registered with the Ministry of Economy of Afghanistan. The governance structure of the EPTDO organizations consists of 5 board members (2 females and 3 male) with executive committee members lead by the Founder and Chief Executive Director and a female who serves as Programme Manager. Several units within the EPTDO organization are led by female members. 

Our work focuses on protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development across Afghanistan. We strive to build resilient communities and ecosystems by emphasizing climate adaptation, livelihood and agricultural development, and gender equality. 

Additionally, we aim to mitigate the severe impacts of climate change through the following thematic areas:

The EPTDO has a proven track record of successfully implementing a variety of complex climate change and environmental programs and projects, both independently and on behalf of donor organizations. Our efforts have been recognized by several international organizations and agencies, reflecting our commitment to impactful environmental action.

The Project Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing the planning, implementation, and monitoring of project activities within the specified scope, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and donor requirements. A crucial aspect of this role involves leveraging their familiarity with the local context, socio-political dynamics, and post-conflict or crisis situations in Afghanistan to adapt strategies effectively and foster community engagement. The coordinator will work closely with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, local communities, and international partners, to facilitate smooth coordination and ensure project objectives are met in challenging environments.

Additionally, the ideal candidate will have experience in implementing projects funded by UNDP, UN, or INGOs, which will be considered an advantage in navigating international standards and reporting requirements. They will demonstrate strong leadership skills by guiding program or project teams, with a focus on promoting gender equality and ensuring diverse representation in climate resilience initiatives, Integrated Water Management (IWM), and related activities. Excellent oral and written communication skills, combined with strong representational and interpersonal abilities, are essential for engaging stakeholders, advocating for project goals, and maintaining effective partnerships in a complex and dynamic setting.

Key Responsibilities:

• Plan, coordinate, and oversee the implementation of project activities to ensure timely and effective achievement of project objectives in line with organizational and donor requirements.
• Leverage knowledge of Afghanistan’s local context, socio-political dynamics, and post-conflict situations to adapt project strategies and facilitate community engagement.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with local stakeholders, government agencies, international partners, and community members to support project goals and ensure effective coordination.
• Monitor and evaluate project progress, ensuring activities are aligned with planned outcomes, and prepare regular progress reports for internal use and donor reporting.
• Ensure the integration of gender equality and diverse representation in all project activities, particularly within climate resilience and Integrated Water Management (IWM) initiatives.
• Lead and motivate program or project teams, providing guidance, support, and capacity-building to ensure effective teamwork and achievement of project milestones.
• Manage project budgets and resources efficiently, ensuring financial accountability and adherence to organizational policies and donor guidelines.
• Ensure compliance with UNDP, UN, INGO, and other relevant standards and regulations in project implementation and reporting.
• Identify, assess, and mitigate risks associated with project activities, particularly those related to security, socio-political issues, and community engagement.
• Represent the organization effectively at meetings, conferences, and community forums, acting as a key point of contact and advocate for the project.
• Facilitate participatory planning and decision-making processes, ensuring inclusive engagement of marginalized groups, especially women and vulnerable populations.
• Maintain clear, concise, and professional communication, both oral and written, to ensure stakeholders are well-informed and engaged throughout the project lifecycle.

1. Education

• Bachelor’s in social sciences, rural development, economics, or any other related discipline.
• Master’s degree or Project Management certification (e.g., PMP/PRINCE2) is an advantage.

2. Work Experience

• Minimum of 7 years of project management experience (for Master and
• 9 years for a Bachelor in climate resilience-related infrastructure, development, livelihood, Environmental Science, Hydrology, Environmental Engineering, Human Resource Management in developing countries, preferably in Afghanistan.
• Familiarity with the local context, socio-political dynamics, and post-conflict/crisis situations in Afghanistan.
• Experience in implementing projects funded by UNDP/UN/INGOs is an added value.
• Experience in leading program/project teams and ensuring gender equality and representation in climate resilient work, IWM, and its implementation.

3. Project Management Skills

• Demonstrated ability to plan, monitor, and deliver projects within scope, time, and budget.
• Strong financial management skills, including budgeting and invoice preparation.
• Experience in contract administration and stakeholder coordination.

4. Soft Skills

• Excellent communication and negotiation skills in both English and local languages (Dari/Pashto).
• Strong leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
• Ability to work effectively with government agencies (e.g., Brishna), donors, contractors, and communities.
• High level of integrity, accountability, and commitment to quality and safety.
