Job Description
A Legal Officer in the telecommunications sector is responsible for navigating complex regulatory frameworks, managing vendor and customer contracts, ensuring compliance with telecommunications laws, and managing legal risks, they act as a bridge between technical teams and legal authorities, in addition provide accurate, timely, and strategic legal advice on regulatory, contractual, and corporate matters to ensure compliance and minimize legal exposure.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Legal Advisory & Compliance (Telecom Regulatory)
- Ensure full compliance with national telecommunications regulations, licenses, and permit requirements.
- Monitor legislative developments (cybersecurity, data privacy, consumer protection) and advise management on impacts.
- Act as the primary contact for regulatory bodies (e.g., FCC, TRAI, NCC).
- Review company policies to ensure compliance with local and international telecom laws.
2. Contract Management & Negotiations
- Draft, review, and negotiate high-value contracts, including interconnection agreements, infrastructure sharing, vendor agreements, and Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
- Identify, assess, and mitigate risks in commercial agreements.
- Track contract performance, compliance, and handle renewals or closeouts.
3. Litigation & Dispute Resolution
- Manage disputes related to customers, operators, and vendors.
- Liaise with external solicitors and manage litigation processes.
- Handle legal communications with government and non-government organizations.
4. Corporate Governance
- Assist with board meeting preparations, resolutions, and official documentation.
- Draft and manage internal policies, including conflict of interest policies.
Job Requirements
- Education: Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or equivalent; a Master’s in Law (LLM) or ICT law is often preferred.
- Experience: 3-5+ years of experience in a corporate legal department or law firm, with direct exposure to the telecommunications industry.
- Technical Knowledge: Understanding of technical concepts like network infrastructure, spectrum rights, and cybersecurity
