Job Description

Under the overall supervision of the Senior/Program Associate (MHU) and direct supervision of the health facility in charge/Team Leader, and administrative supervision of relevant Heads of Sub Office/regional coordinator, the Incumbent will assist in ensuring basic medical screening is carried out, particularly in the areas of reproductive, maternal and child health care. Critical medical cases will be referred to additional services through partners, the government, and private hospital partners.

The midwife is expected to carry out her duties in accordance with the strictest ethical standards, building and maintaining partnerships with the government, international organizations, and non-governmental agencies, and with due respect for gender and socio-cultural sensitivities. Deployment areas may include IDP settlements in rural or remote areas within the project scope.

Job Requirements

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Provide respectful midwifery care to women of reproductive age, including pregnant and lactating women, in line with national guidelines.
  2. Deliver and support antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care (ANC/PNC) services, including counselling on danger signs, birth preparedness, and family planning.
  3. Provide counselling to women and families on maternal, newborn, and postpartum care, including self‑care and newborn care practices.
  4. Support screening and referral of pregnant and lactating women and their under‑five children for nutrition, routine immunization, and Td vaccination.
  5. Ensure accurate updating of ANC/PNC registers and referrals, including coordination for defaulter tracing with vaccination and nutrition services.
  6. Identify and facilitate timely referral of high‑risk pregnancies and obstetric complications, with appropriate follow‑up.
  7. Assist Medical Doctors with history taking, basic examinations, measurements, specimen collection, medicine dispensing, and patient follow‑up, as required.
  8. Clearly explain medical procedures and treatment plans in a compassionate, culturally appropriate manner.
  9. Participate in community outreach and health education activities targeting women of child‑bearing age and PLWs.
  10. Support infection prevention and control (IPC), patient triage, and hygiene promotion at service delivery points.
  11. Maintain accurate, confidential patient records and support preparation of routine daily reports.
  12. Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the line supervisor.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • Diploma in Midwifery with at least one year of relevant professional experience after graduation.

            Or

  • High School diploma with a minimum of three (3) years of relevant professional experience

Experience:

  • Experience in relevant clinical fields.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting childbirth and managing common obstetric complications in line with national guidelines.
  • Previous experience in international organizations is an advantage.
  • Knowledge and experience of working in a medical emergency / Trauma department will be added as an advantage.

Skills

  • Proficient in core midwifery and clinical skills, including infection prevention and control (IPC), medication administration, phlebotomy, respectful bedside care, and basic equipment readiness.
  • Adequate practical knowledge of handling child delivery and its complications.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with partners, and beneficiaries to support effective maternal and newborn health service delivery.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Patient and compassionate disposition.

Languages:

  • For all Applicants, fluency in Dari and Pashto is required (oral and written).
  • Working knowledge of English is required.
  • Fluency in all national language(s) are highly advantages.
