Hagar International in Afghanistan implements several integrated programs designed to help survivors recover from trauma and rebuild their lives. These include running Child-Friendly Spaces in IDP camps, economic empowerment initiatives and resilient livelihoods programs, community-based child protection programs, humanitarian relief projects, primary health care services, and emergency response activities.

Job Description

Position Purpose

The Psychosocial Counsellor is responsible for providing high-quality, confidential, and ethical Health care services to the Bridges to Hope and Healing (BHH) project's beneficiaries in targeted health facilities. These beneficiaries include returnees, IDPs, and Host communities survivors of human trafficking, and other forms of extreme abuse and trauma. The position holder will employ a survivor-cantered approach to improve beneficiaries' mental well-being, foster resilience, and support their journey toward recovery and successful rehabilitation within the Specialized MHPSS Ward in Paktia Regional Hospital.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

Support the set up of a new in patient mental health ward

Accurately follow doctor’s orders and treatment plans

Administer medications to inpatients according to the doctor's prescription.

Document all treatment, medication and other patient care in patient medical records according to the doctor's orders

Actively participate in nursing, MHPSS and PSEA training programs, meetings, and committees.

Respond to any emergency psychiatric situations

Follow, implement, and adhere to the established standards in nursing care.

Perform night shifts according to the assigned duty schedule.

Follow up on laboratory tests for admitted (inpatient) patients.

Arrange and control daily medication supplies for the ward

Provide health education to both inpatients and outpatients.

Submit timely and accurate daily reports to the relevant supervisor.

Submit the files of discharged patients to the relevant authority in a timely manner.

Job Requirements

Key Selection Criteria

Education:

Nursing diploma from a recognized intermediate medical institute. Bachelor degree is preferred.

Clinical experience in a ward/hospital setting.

Proficient in patient care, medication administration, vital signs monitoring, and infection control.

Strong communication and reporting skills.

Ability to work shifts, including night duties.

Experience:

Minimum 2 years of clinical nursing experience in a hospital or health facility.

At least 1 years of experience working directly with adult patients.

Experience providing trauma-informed care and supporting patients with mental health conditions (e.g., PTSD, depression, anxiety) is strongly preferred.

Experience with international or local NGOs in MHPSS is an advantage.

Familiarity with patient documentation, reporting, and referral systems is desirable.

Strong communication, reporting, and teamwork skills.

Skills and Personal Attributes:

Excellent communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills.

Ability to treat patients from difficult backgrounds with empathy, respect, and care.

Strong skills in patient education, bedside counseling, and family communication.

Culturally sensitive, adaptable, and resilient in challenging environments.

Fluency in Pashto and Dari is required; working knowledge of English is an advantage.
