Purpose of the Position

The Medical Doctor (MD) is responsible for providing timely, high-quality emergency and trauma care services to patients presenting to the Trauma Care Unit. The MD ensures appropriate assessment, stabilization, treatment, referral, and follow-up of trauma and emergency cases in accordance with national guidelines and our client standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide 24/7 emergency medical assessment and management of trauma and critically ill patients.
• Perform primary and secondary trauma surveys following internationally recognized trauma care principles.
• Stabilize patients with life-threatening injuries and initiate appropriate emergency treatment.
• Perform emergency procedures within the scope of practice, including:
• Airway management and resuscitation
• Wound assessment and suturing
• Fracture immobilization and splinting
• Chest tube insertion (where qualified)
• Hemorrhage control
• Basic emergency surgical procedures, as appropriate
• Request and interpret laboratory and diagnostic imaging investigations.
• Prescribe medications, blood transfusions, and other treatments as indicated.
• Monitor patient progress and determine admission, discharge, or referral decisions.

• Maintain complete, accurate, and timely medical records.
• Record trauma cases using hospital registers and DHIS2 or other designated reporting systems.
• Report mortality, severe trauma cases, mass casualty incidents, and notifiable conditions according to national guidelines.

Required Qualifications

• Medical Doctor (MD) registered with the Afghanistan Medical Council.
• Valid license to practice medicine.

Short courses:

• Training in Basic Emergency Care (BEC), Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), or equivalent is desirable.
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS); Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is an advantage.

Experience

• Minimum of 2–3 years of clinical experience in emergency medicine, surgery, trauma care, or a related field.
• Experience working in emergency departments or trauma care units is preferred.
• Experience in managing mass casualty incidents is an asset.

• Strong clinical decision-making and emergency management skills.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and during emergencies.
• Good documentation and reporting skills.
• Knowledge of national treatment protocols and WHO emergency care guidelines.
• Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office and DHIS2 (desirable).

• Regular submission of clinical and service reports.
