Job Description

SDO seeks a qualified and compassionate Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist to provide safe, timely and respectful care at Badakhshan Provincial Hospital. The specialist will manage routine and complicated obstetric and gynecological cases, respond to emergencies, and support the clinical development of the maternity team. The role contributes to preventing avoidable maternal and newborn deaths while protecting every patient’s dignity, privacy and right to informed care.

Key Responsibilities

1.      Provide specialist care: Assess, diagnose and manage obstetric and gynecological conditions in outpatient, inpatient and emergency services, following applicable Ministry of Public Health protocols and evidence-based clinical guidance.

2.     Manage pregnancy and childbirth: Provide antenatal and postnatal care, identify high-risk pregnancies, monitor maternal and fetal wellbeing, and manage labour and delivery, including complications.

3.     Respond to emergencies: Promptly assess and manage obstetric emergencies, including postpartum haemorrhage, severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, obstructed labour, sepsis and ectopic pregnancy. Arrange stabilization and referral when additional care is required.

4.     Perform clinical procedures and surgery: Undertake cesarean sections and other indicated obstetric and gynecological procedures within approved clinical privileges and hospital capacity, ensuring informed consent, surgical safety and appropriate postoperative care.

5.     Provide gynecological and reproductive healthcare: Manage reproductive tract infections, menstrual disorders and other common conditions; provide appropriate screening, counselling and referral for fertility concerns, menopause and suspected malignancies.

6.     Use investigations and medicines appropriately: Request and interpret relevant investigations, perform examinations and ultrasound where trained and authorized, and prescribe treatment responsibly in accordance with approved protocols.

7.     Support informed decisions: Explain diagnoses, treatment options, warning signs and follow-up needs in language patients understand. Provide voluntary family planning counselling and involve family members according to the patient’s wishes and consent.

8.     Maintain continuity of care: Conduct regular ward rounds, ensure clear clinical handovers, and fulfil assigned duty and on-call responsibilities. Coordinate with midwifery, nursing, anesthesia, pediatric, laboratory and referral teams.

9.     Strengthen staff capacity: Provide practical supervision, bedside teaching and case discussions for medical officers, midwives and nurses, with particular attention to recognizing complications and responding to emergencies.

10.   Maintain clinical records and reporting: Complete accurate, timely and confidential patient records, including assessments, consent, treatment, operative notes, discharge plans and referrals. Contribute to departmental and Health Management Information System reporting.

11.    Improve quality and patient safety: Apply infection prevention and control measures, participate in maternal and perinatal death reviews and clinical audits, and follow up agreed improvements. Promptly report incidents, equipment faults and critical supply shortages.
