Job Description

The pediatric specialist will provide high-quality clinical care to neonates, infants, and children, including diagnosis, treatment, management of pediatric emergencies, and managing complicated cases appropriately in accordance with MoPH standards and national clinical guidelines.
The position will provide technical supervision and mentorship to health staff, strengthen pediatric and neonatal services, and support quality improvement, infection prevention, nutrition, immunization, and disease surveillance activities. The pediatric specialist will work closely with relevant departments to ensure coordinated, safe, and effective pediatric and newborn care.


Specific Responsibilities:
Provide comprehensive outpatient and inpatient pediatric and neonatal care, including diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, and management of complicated cases.
Manage pediatric and neonatal emergencies, including sepsis, birth asphyxia, respiratory distress, severe acute malnutrition, dehydration, and convulsions.
Conduct regular ward rounds and ensure timely review and treatment adjustment, and manage complicated cases.
Ensure adherence to IMNCI, MoPH Standard Treatment Guidelines, neonatal care protocols, and other national/international clinical standards.
Provide and supervise quality neonatal care, including resuscitation, management of preterm/LBW newborns, jaundice, sepsis, respiratory distress, breastfeeding, and Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC).
Supervise pediatric nutrition services, including management of severe acute malnutrition.
Ensure appropriate use of medicines, infection prevention and control (IPC), and accurate medical documentation.
Participate in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, MPDSR/CDR, quality improvement activities, and disease surveillance/outbreak response.
Provide mentorship, on-the-job training, and supportive supervision to doctors, nurses, and midwives.
Prepare timely reports and support forecasting and rational use of medicines, vaccines, therapeutic foods, and medical supplies.
Participate in on-call duties, facility coordination meetings, and other activities related to pediatric service delivery.
Perform other duties assigned by the hospital/medical director in support of quality pediatric and neonatal services.

Job Requirements

Minimum of 3-5 years of clinical experience in pediatrics/neonatology, preferably within a BPHS/EPHS-supported health facility or specialization hospital.
Demonstrated experience in managing pediatric emergencies, severe acute malnutrition, and neonatal care.
Fluency in English and Pashto, with excellent speaking and writing skills.
Proficient computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet design, and presentations.
