Medical Officer

Background:

Established in 2006 through a partnership between the Government of Afghanistan, the Government of France, La Chaîne de l’Espoir, and the Aga Khan Development Network, FMIC has become Afghanistan’s leading tertiary healthcare institution and a regional centre of excellence. Operated by the Aga Khan University, FMIC delivers high-quality, patient-centred care in accordance with international standards while serving as a hub for education, research, and innovation.

Over the past two decades, FMIC has provided healthcare services to more than 2.6 million patients, performed over 6,000 cardiac surgeries, and introduced numerous medical advancements, including Afghanistan’s first open-heart surgery and a range of specialised diagnostic and treatment services. Through telemedicine, outreach programmes, and financial assistance initiatives, FMIC continues to expand access to quality healthcare for underserved populations across the country.

Beyond clinical care, FMIC plays a vital role in strengthening Afghanistan’s health system through the training of healthcare professionals, postgraduate medical education, and the promotion of innovation and evidence-based practice. Regular Responsibilities:

·         Conduct patient consultations, assessments, and diagnosis.

·         Prescribe appropriate treatments, medications, and follow-up plans.

·         Perform procedures within their scope of practice and assist in complex cases under supervision or independently as per granted privileges.

·         Ensure proper documentation of patient history, examination findings, and care plans.

·         Adhere to SafeCare standards in all clinical activities.

·         Maintain patient safety protocols, infection control measures, and quality improvement initiatives.

·         Liaise with consultants, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals to deliver multidisciplinary care.

·         Communicate effectively with patients and their families about diagnosis, treatment options, and prognosis.

·         Provide clinical guidance and support to ensure effective patient care.

·         Respond to medical emergencies promptly and efficiently.

·         Participate in on-call rotations and ensure continuity of care during shifts.

·         Contribute to departmental audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, and quality improvement programs.

·         Participate in the development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures.

Periodic Responsibilities:

·         Attend Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions, workshops, and training programs.

·         Stay updated on the latest medical advancements and clinical guidelines.

·         Participate in clinical audits, peer reviews, and quality improvement projects.

·         Prepare for and contribute to SafeCare accreditation reviews.

·         Support hospital outreach programs and health awareness campaigns.

Academic & professional qualifications

·         Medical Degree from a recognized university.

·         Registered with the Afghan Medical Council (AMC)

Work experience:

·         1-2 years of clinical experience in a hospital setting.

Knowledge and competencies (State skills, abilities & traits required)   

·         Understanding of SafeCare standards in healthcare.

·         Familiarity with clinical protocols, infection control, and patient safety guidelines.

·         Ability to manage complex cases and support decision-making under pressure.

·         Excellent diagnostic and problem-solving skills.

·         Excellent communication (in Pashto, Dari, and English languages) and interpersonal skills.

·         Proficiency in medical documentation and use of hospital information systems.

·         Excellent computer skills, especially in MS Office Packages.
