About Turquoise Mountain
Turquoise Mountain is a non-profit, non-governmental organization specializing in urban regeneration, business development, and education in traditional arts and architecture. We seek to provide education, skills and livelihoods to Afghan men and women. Since 2006 Turquoise Mountain has cleared 36,000 cubic meters of rubbish from the streets, restored or built 150 historic and community buildings, created a primary school and a clinic, and installed water, electricity, and sanitation through the historic traditional craft neighborhood of Murad Khani in the old city of Kabul. It has created the internationally accredited Institute for Afghan Arts & Architecture, training the next generation of craftsmen and women in woodwork, jewelry and gem cutting, calligraphy and miniature painting, and ceramics. Finally, it has sold over US$15,000,000 of Afghan artisan products internationally.
Job Description
Order and production management
- Work in close coordination with other members of the Turquoise Mountain carpet team to oversee all technical aspects relating to the production of carpet orders.
- Coordinate closely with carpet producer companies (management, wool spinners, dyers, weavers, washing/finishing teams) to ensure all carpet orders are finished on time and to the required design and quality
- Coordinate closely with the Turquoise Mountain sales and customer liaison teams to ensure accurate information on all orders is given to them on the production status of all outstanding customer orders.
- Support the introduction of new carpet designs by acting as an intermediary between Turquoise Mountain designers/sales agents/international client and local carpet producer companies
Capacity Building
- Raise the technical skill levels (especially in dyeing, washing and finishing) of carpet producer companies by carrying out trainings so they are able to fulfil orders from international clients to a consistently high standard
- Carry out visits to carpet producer companies to provide training and to supervise order fulfillment, and to ensure quality control
General Activities:
- Help identify new carpet producer companies to join Turquoise Mountain’s current development program
- Identify way to improve the production infrastructure of carpet producer companies
- Contribute to Turquoise Mountain’s strategy for supporting the Afghan carpet industry in collaboration with other members of the carpet team
- Participate in regular coordination calls with management and other team members
Job Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of experience in carpet production with experience in wool spinning, wool dying process, weaving, washing, and finishing.
- A diploma in social science or a related field at the undergraduate level.
- An understanding of carpet qualities and finishes required by international carpet customers.
- Experience in carpet design software preferred.
- Experience of using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word)
- An understanding of local languages (Dari, Pashtu and or Turkman), and English
