Job Descriptions:

The Welfare Association for the Development of Afghanistan (WADAN), with funding from the World Health Organization (WHO), is implementing a healthcare project in Helmand Province. This initiative aims to provide emergency and primary healthcare services, including polio vaccination, for underserved and emergency-affected populations. The Pharmacist will play a critical role in ensuring the availability, quality, and proper use of medicines within this WHO-funded project.

Key Responsibilities:

Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Management

  • Plan and oversee medicine procurement and distribution for sub-health centers and outreach teams.
  • Ensure compliance with WHO’s standard operating procedures (SOPs) for medicine storage, including cold chain requirements for vaccines.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records to track medicine movement, stock levels, and avoid shortages.
  • Support logistics for polio vaccination campaigns by managing vaccine storage and distribution.

Quality Assurance and Compliance

  • Ensure all medicines meet WHO quality assurance standards and Afghanistan’s national regulations.
  • Conduct regular inspections of WADAN-supported pharmacies and storage facilities to ensure proper storage conditions.
  • Monitor expiration dates and arrange for the safe disposal of expired or damaged medications.

Capacity Building and Technical Support

  • Train health facility staff on rational drug use, pharmacovigilance, and safe medicine handling.
  • Provide technical guidance on vaccine cold chain management and emergency medicine stockpiling.
  • Support the development and implementation of essential medicine lists and treatment guidelines.

Monitoring and Reporting

  • Conduct regular assessments of pharmaceutical management in sub-health centers and outreach teams.
  • Prepare timely reports on medicine consumption, vaccine stock levels, and identified challenges.
  • Contribute to risk assessments and emergency preparedness plans related to pharmaceutical supplies.

Quality Assurance and Compliance

  • Ensure all medicines meet WHO quality assurance standards and Afghanistan’s national regulations.
  • Conduct regular inspections of WADAN-supported pharmacies and storage facilities to ensure proper storage conditions.
  • Monitor expiration dates and arrange for the safe disposal of expired or damaged medications.

Safeguarding, PSEA, and Compliance

  • Ensure integration and implementation of Protection from Sexual Exploitation and
  • Abuse (PSEA), Child Safeguarding, and Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP) principles across all project activities.
  • Ensure staff and partners adhere to organizational policies, WHO requirements, and codes of conduct.
  • Report and address safeguarding concerns in line with established procedures.

Job Requirements:

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related field from a recognized university.
  • Valid registration with Afghanistan’s pharmacy regulatory authority is preferred.
  • Specialized training in supply chain management, quality assurance, or cold chain management for vaccines.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in pharmaceutical supply chain management, procurement, or clinical pharmacy.
  • Experience in WHO, UN agencies, NGOs, or government health programs is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Afghanistan’s pharmaceutical regulations and vaccine management.

Working Conditions:

  • The position is field-based in Helmand province and requires regular travel to health facilities and mobile teams.
  • Work may involve occasional weekend or emergency duty, depending on project needs.
  • Compliance with security protocols and field movement restrictions is mandatory.
