Job Descriptions:

Responsible for diagnosing and surgically treating a wide range of general surgical conditions or management of specilaized surgical cases in collaboration with surgical specialists. Perform procedures to address injuries, diseases, and deformities, using both non-invasive, invasive and minimally invasive techniques. Overall responsible for evaluating patients, developing treatment plans, conducting surgeries, and providing comprehensive preoperative and postoperative care. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient outcomes and respond to emergencies. Additionally, must stay updated on surgical advancements and adhere to medical protocols and ethical standards (including INTERSOS standards and ethics).

Hierarchical: Medical Activity Manager and Hospital Medical Director

Functional: Medical Activity Manager

 

Tasks

  • Conduct thorough assessments of patients, including obtaining medical history, conducting physical exams, and ordering diagnostic tests.
  • Formulate accurate diagnoses and recommend appropriate surgical interventions.
  • Develop and discuss surgical treatment plans with patients and caregivers (where required), explaining procedures, risks, and expected outcomes.
  • Undertake pre-operative consultations, evaluating the surgical risks with the anaesthetist and/or other medical staff involved, and obtain the patient’s signed consent to operate
  • Provide postoperative care, including monitoring patients’ recovery and managing any complications.
  • Perform a wide range of general surgical procedures, including but not limited to abdominal, hernia, gallbladder, and appendectomy surgeries.
  • Utilize advanced surgical techniques and maintain proficiency in laparoscopic, minimally invasive, and open surgical methods.
  • Adhere to safety and sterilization protocols to prevent infection and ensure patient safety.
  • Work closely with anaesthesiologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings to discuss patient cases and develop comprehensive care plans.
  • Provide consultation to other medical professionals regarding surgical options and patient management.
  • Collected patient files, operating department register, patient files, etc, to monitor quality. Monthly data review, clinical trends analysis, and comment on adverse events / poor clinical outcomes. Support organizing the operating program and with OT staff monitor the use of material and equipment advise on instrument needs and coordinate patient referral.,
  • Adhere to established medical protocols, safety standards, and ethical guidelines in all aspects of patient care and clinical practice.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives enhance surgical outcomes and patient care.
  • Be available for on-call rotations to provide emergency surgical interventions.
  • Manage trauma cases and perform lifesaving procedures when necessary.
  • Stay up to date with the latest surgical advancements, attending continuing education and training programs.
  • Plan, evaluate, and supervise the training of the staff (emergency and the out-patient teams) to ensure the amount of knowledge required and improve people diagnosing, triage, and early detection capabilities.
  • Supports other medical teams/wards when needed (i.e., midwives and obstetric teams in the maternity ward, etc.)

Job Requirements:

  • Medical degree (MD or MBBS) from an accredited medical school.
  • Completion of a residency program in General Surgery.
  • Afghanistan Postgraduate Medical Board certification in General Surgery.
  • Valid Afghanistan Medical practice license.
  • Advanced knowledge of surgical techniques, anatomy, and patient care principles.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, and physical stamina.
  • Strong communication, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle emergencies.
  • Commitment to INTERSOS principles
  • Fluency in Pashto and Dari is important. Fluency in English will also be an added advantage
