The Afghanistan Educational and Health Development Aids Organization (AEHDA) is a non-profit, non-political, non-sectarian, and non-governmental humanitarian organization, led by women. Initially established as an association in July 2003, AEHDA was re-registered as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) with the Ministry of Economy (MoEc) of Afghanistan in late 2020, under registration number .

Job Descriptions:

1. Background

The Afghan Empowerment and Humanitarian Development Association (AEHDA) aims to empower Afghan women, youth, and vulnerable groups through healthcare, education, and psychosocial support. The MHPSS Community Health Worker role is central to AEHDA’s project in Zabul, focusing on providing mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) to Afghan women and girls affected by conflict, displacement, and social challenges. This role will involve outreach, mental health literacy promotion, and primary psychosocial support services.

2. Purpose of the Role

The MHPSS Community Health Worker will provide frontline mental health and psychosocial support to vulnerable Afghan women and girls in Zabul. This role is essential for conducting outreach activities, delivering psychological first aid (PFA), and connecting community members with essential mental health resources and services. The role is pivotal in bridging community awareness and access to mental health care within culturally appropriate and safe spaces.

 

3. Key Responsibilities

Community Outreach and Engagement

  • Conduct regular community outreach to identify women and girls in need of mental health support and promote available services.
  • Organize and participate in awareness-raising activities about mental health to reduce stigma and increase mental health literacy within target communities.
  • Distribute culturally sensitive educational materials and encourage community members to engage with mental health support services.

Psychological First Aid (PFA) and Basic Support

  • Provide basic psychological first aid to women and girls experiencing emotional distress, listening to their concerns and offering immediate, compassionate support.
  • Assist with identifying psychosocial issues, providing practical assistance and information to clients as needed.
  • Support clients in developing coping strategies and reinforce the importance of self-care and mental health management.

Referral and Follow-Up Support

  • Identify and refer cases needing specialized mental health support to AEHDA’s MHPSS Medical Doctor, counselors, or other healthcare providers.
  • Conduct follow-up visits to referred clients to monitor their progress and ensure they are receiving continuous support.
  • Collaborate with AEHDA’s MHPSS team to maintain a coordinated approach to mental health care and ensure that clients receive appropriate, sustained assistance.

Community-Based Peer Support Facilitation

  • Facilitate peer support groups for women and girls, creating a safe and supportive environment for sharing experiences, learning coping skills, and building resilience.
  • Encourage community members to participate in peer support networks, fostering a sense of solidarity and reducing isolation.
  • Work closely with local leaders to integrate mental health awareness into community gatherings and support efforts for community resilience.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records of outreach activities, counseling sessions, referrals, and follow-up visits while ensuring client confidentiality.
  • Collect feedback from community members to assess the effectiveness of services and recommend improvements.
  • Prepare regular reports for AEHDA’s project management team on outreach activities, challenges faced, and client outcomes.

4. Working Conditions

  • Location: This position is based in Zabul, with frequent travel to outreach sites within the community.
  • Hours: Standard working hours, with some flexibility required for community events and emergency cases.
  • Security: Adheres to AEHDA’s security protocols, and is willing to work in a potentially high-risk environment while following all safety guidelines.

5. Policy

AEHDA enforces a strict zero-tolerance policy for Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA). AEHDA does not tolerate any form of sexual misconduct, and all potential candidates will undergo thorough background checks and vetting processes.

Job Requirements:

1. Qualifications and Experience

  • Education: Minimum high school 12th Class or 14th ; training in health services, social work, or mental health is highly desirable.
  • Experience: At least 1-2 years of experience in community outreach or health-related work, especially within humanitarian or social service organizations. Experience in mental health or psychosocial support is a plus.
  • Language: Proficiency in Pashto; Dari / English skills are an advantage.
