About Handicap International:

Job Purpose:

The Technician of Prosthetics and Orthotics works within the overall structure of Handicap International (HI), he/she is bound by the Terms and conditions of engagement for national staff and by the Internal Regulation.

The Technician of Prosthetics and Orthotics is responsible to participate in multidisciplinary rehab team assessment, take measurement and produce Prosthetics & Orthotics aids and appliances, minor repairs of P&O, mobility aids and is directly responsible to the project manager.

 

The Duties and responsibilities may include but not limited to: 

Key Responsibilities:

Responsibilities as a Technician

  • To make negative and positive cast for all kind of Prosthetics and Orthotics. Control the quality of the Prosthetics and Orthotics appliances respecting the cost-effective manner.
  • To take measurement & produce all types of Prosthesis & Orthotic devices and maintain effective communication with all patients regardless of disability or gender, respecting the privacy.
  • Follow and respect policies and procedures of workshop laid down by the management.
  • To take part in consultation with PT in the selection of mobility aids, Prosthetics and orthotics device for patients, once needed.
  • Assess a person's need for appliances so as to confirm and/or complete a prescription for an orthopaedic device.
  • In line of minimum standard quality control, make necessary changes in techniques of Prosthetics and Orthotics production in order to adapt new skills and upgrade techniques.
  • To do all types of repairs related to the Production of its section.
  • Ensure the training and follow up of the person with the appliance, by performing the necessary technical checks, skill/gait training, providing information about the use, maintenance, repair and the replacement times of appliance. Involving the caregivers or patient family in the treatment process.
  • To work in collaboration with the P&O team and inform Project Manager about the activity of the P&O services and any issues arising in the section.
  • To supervise the maintenance and ensure the good use of appliances, tools & equipment of department and inform immediately to Project Manager in case of any misplacement/breakdown/malfunction.
  • To update and follow closely the related stock cards.
  • To be able to follow up and guide the patients/ caregivers, if the appliance requires major repair and changes.
  • Follow and respect policies and procedures of workshop laid down by the management.
  • To follow the schedule and respect production/repairing timing.
  • To keep accurate record of the production, repair, remaining, delivery and use of raw materials.
  • When required, to help the project manager for preparation of the monthly report about the activities, identified problems, proposed solutions etc.
  • To help the project manager and make order for raw materials according to the position of stock inventory & production requirement.
  • To write down technical cards for mobility aids in patient consultation, when required.
  • Ensure and report maintenance of machines.
  • To help the counterparts when he/she is busy.
  • To respect and follow Technical Unit advices.

 

Responsibilities as a trainee:

  • To participate in any internal and external trainings required and requested by the Technical unit and project manager
  • To train the patients and/or family how to use and maintain the devices.

 

Other Responsibilities:

  • To share information and exchange ideas with other Technicians
  • When required assist other staff
  • To be responsible of cleaning his work place and machinery, tools at the end of each day
  • To participate in weekly or monthly meetings
  • To keep a good relationship with the team
  • To attend HI meetings on request
  • Any other tasks not mentioned in the terms of reference and based on the requisition/ requirements of the project should be fulfilled by the employee when requested by the Project Manager.

Job Requirements:

Qualifications and Skills:

  • 3 Years P&O Diploma in Prosthetics and Orthotics.
  • Have CAT II diploma (Category 2 diploma in Prosthetics/orthotics program)
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in prosthetics/orthotics production.
