About Action Against Hunger:

Action Against Hunger (AAH) is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that was created in France in 1979. AAH has been active in Afghanistan in the medical, nutrition, food security, and water and sanitation fields since 1995. AAH improved access to health and nutrition services for the most vulnerable people, who live in remote areas without a local health system. In particular, the country team supported pregnant and breastfeeding women and children under five, who are at greater risk of malnutrition. Nutrition programmes rely on an integrated approach, addressing both primary and underlying causes, in order to have a lasting impact on nutritional status. The country team worked at community level, in villages and at provincial level, strengthening the public health system. It also worked at national level to ensure reliable information about the nutritional situation reached the wider humanitarian community. Covid-19 prevention was integrated into all interventions and additional response activities were implemented, such as the disinfection of health facilities and public places, cash assistance, psychosocial support and the distribution of hygiene kits to affected populations.

Job Descriptions:

Mission 1: Ensuring the provision of MIYCN counselling services for the MHNT/SHCs target beneficiaries that include caregivers of under two years children, pregnant, and lactating women:

  • Helps to identify needs for breastfeeding counseling and provide adequate counseling
  • Facilitates sessions on nutrition, health, and hygiene practices for pregnant and lactating women, as well as caregivers of malnourished children, attending the MIYCN counseling sessions in the targeted areas of the MHNT/SHCs.
  • Providing individual to train community health workers and volunteers on best practices for infant and young child feeding.
  • Conducting group sessions on MIYCF topics at the MHNT targeted communities.
  • Referring children and PLWs for required nutritional/medical care within the MHNT/SHCs.
  • Prepare daily/weekly reports on activities and any necessary reports as requested by the MHNT/SHCs Doctor/Supervisor.
  • Provide Individual/group MIYCN counselling session to the beneficiaries of the MHNT/SHCs.
  • Register clients and fill in the MIYCN register, and carry out initial assessments & screenings using validated tools, and fill out client forms/tools during and after sessions

Mission 2: Provide technical support for community health workers/volunteers on MIYCN counselling services at the community level.

  • Facilitate the scheduling of outreach workers/volunteers for follow-up of caregivers of children with breastfeeding difficulties at home.
  • Identify mothers to become peer educators in their home villages and to support them to undertake sensitization and referral to the MHNT/SHCs.
  • To train community health workers/volunteers on best practices for infant and young child feeding.
  • Responsible for MIYCN program activities record keeping and reporting

Mission 3: Represent Action Against Hunger.

  • The professional image of his/her ACF program
  • Respect for the principles and values of ACF in the framework of the partnership
  • Respect the ACF charter
  • Explain to stakeholders and to populations the activities and the objectives of the programs

Job Requirements:

Education (if relevant) and experiences expected:

  • Graduates from high school 12 grade.

Technical skills:

  • At least 2 years’ experience in the field nutrition counselling.
  • Receiving the nutrition counsellors basic package training will be an asset.

Transverse skills:

  • Sufficient knowledge of nutrition counselling.
  • Precision and exactitude. Good capacity to work in a team
  • Excellent communication with beneficiaries.
  • Fluent in local languages (Dari & Pashto).
  • Having a high flexibility to travel to the MHNT targeted villages.
  • Good planning, organizing and reporting kills.
  • Ability to manage working environment according to local context.

Managerial skills:

  • Develops and promotes effective collaboration within and across units to achieve shared goals and optimize results.
  • Ability to manage his/her working environment according to local context.
