Position Summary
The Intensivist is responsible for providing comprehensive, evidence-based critical care services to adult patients requiring intensive monitoring and advanced life support. As a consultant in a tertiary care teaching hospital, the Intensivist leads the multidisciplinary ICU team, manages critically ill patients with complex medical and surgical conditions, coordinates care across specialties, supervises junior physicians and trainees, and contributes to medical education, clinical research, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives.
The Intensivist plays a central role in ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered critical care while promoting excellence in education and clinical governance.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide specialist critical care services for adult patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
- Assess, diagnose, and manage critically ill patients with life-threatening medical and surgical conditions.
- Lead daily multidisciplinary ICU ward rounds and formulate individualized treatment plans.
- Manage patients requiring:
- Mechanical ventilation (invasive and non-invasive)
- Hemodynamic monitoring and vasoactive medications
- Sepsis and septic shock management
- Multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS)
- Acute respiratory failure
- Acute kidney injury
- Cardiac emergencies
- Neurological emergencies
- Trauma and postoperative critical care
- Poisoning and toxicological emergencies
- Coordinate admission, discharge, and transfer of ICU patients.
- Respond promptly to medical emergencies and provide consultation throughout the hospital.
- Participate in Rapid Response Team (RRT) and Code Blue activations.
- Perform advanced critical care procedures within credentialed scope, including:
- Endotracheal intubation
- Central venous catheter insertion
- Arterial line placement
- Chest tube insertion (where credentialed)
- Bronchoscopy (where trained)
- Ultrasound-guided vascular access
- Bedside critical care ultrasonography (POCUS)
- Interpret laboratory investigations, imaging studies, arterial blood gases (ABGs), ECGs, and bedside ultrasound findings.
- Communicate effectively with patients' families regarding diagnosis, prognosis, treatment plans, and end-of-life care.
- Ensure comprehensive and timely documentation in the medical record.
2. Teaching Responsibilities
As a consultant in a tertiary care teaching hospital, the Intensivist shall:
- Supervise and mentor residents, registrars, interns, and medical officers assigned to the ICU.
- Provide bedside teaching during ICU rounds.
- Deliver lectures, seminars, journal clubs, morbidity and mortality conferences, and simulation-based training.
- Teach mechanical ventilation, airway management, shock management, and resuscitation principles.
- Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
- Assist in curriculum development and competency-based assessments.
- Support continuing medical education (CME) activities.
- Mentor junior physicians in evidence-based critical care practice.
3. Research Responsibilities
- Participate in clinical and operational research related to critical care medicine.
- Conduct and supervise clinical audits.
- Promote evidence-based clinical practice.
- Present research findings at departmental and scientific meetings.
- Publish research in peer-reviewed journals where feasible.
- Participate in ICU quality improvement projects and registry development.
4. Quality Improvement & Patient Safety
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies and international critical care guidelines.
- Promote patient safety initiatives and a culture of continuous quality improvement.
- Lead ICU morbidity and mortality reviews.
- Monitor ICU quality indicators, including:
- Mortality rates
- Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP)
- Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI)
- Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI)
- ICU readmission rates
- Promote infection prevention and control practices.
- Support antimicrobial stewardship programs.
- Report adverse events and participate in root cause analyses.
- Participate in accreditation and quality assurance activities.
5. Administrative Responsibilities
- Participate in ICU departmental meetings and hospital committees.
- Assist in developing ICU policies, protocols, and clinical pathways.
- Ensure efficient utilization of ICU resources and equipment.
- Assist in ICU staffing and duty roster planning.
- Maintain accurate clinical records and ICU performance reports.
- Participate in strategic planning and service development.
- Assist with disaster preparedness and mass casualty planning.

7. Professional Responsibilities
- Practice in accordance with national regulations, ethical standards, and hospital policies.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and informed consent practices.
- Demonstrate professionalism, compassion, integrity, and respect.
- Maintain current licensure and specialist registration.
- Participate in Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
- Maintain certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS); certification in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) or equivalent is desirable.
- Serve as a role model and mentor for healthcare professionals.
Additional Responsibilities as a Teaching Hospital
As a consultant at Cure Hospital, the Intensivist is expected to:
- Lead multidisciplinary ICU ward rounds and case discussions.
- Supervise residents, interns, and medical students in critical care practice.
- Develop and deliver structured educational programs in critical care medicine.
- Conduct simulation-based training in airway management, mechanical ventilation, and advanced life support.
- Participate in clinical research, publications, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Support the development of ICU clinical protocols and evidence-based practice guidelines.
- Contribute to the expansion and continuous improvement of critical care services while fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and lifelong learning.
