Vehicle Driver (Subject to Donor Approval)

Shelter for Life International (SFL) is a non-governmental, non-political, non-profit and international faith-based organization. It has been working in Afghanistan since 1998 and is presently managing long-term and short-term humanitarian and development programs to the people in need in countries around the world. SFL is currently operational in Afghanistan, Liberia, South Sudan, Senegal and Tajikistan. Our Headquarters is located in Minnetonka, MN and funded by multiple donors such as BPRM, USG, USDA, WFP and FAO. SFL has rich experience and provides assistance in the following areas; Agriculture Development, Food Security, livelihood and emergency, Shelter and Population Settlement, Application of Microcredit, Infrastructure Development, and Health and Nutrition.

The Driver is responsible for providing safe, efficient, and reliable transportation services in support of Shelter For Life International's programs and operations. The position ensures the timely movement of staff, visitors, consultants, project materials, and official documents while maintaining the assigned vehicle in a clean, safe, and roadworthy condition. The Driver is expected to comply with organizational policies, security procedures, local traffic laws, and road safety regulations at all times. The role also includes conducting routine vehicle inspections, maintaining accurate vehicle and fuel records, reporting maintenance needs, and supporting logistics and administrative activities as required. The Driver contributes to the effective implementation of program activities by ensuring safe transportation, protecting organizational assets, and maintaining a high standard of professionalism, confidentiality, and customer service during all official duties.

1. Safely transport staff, visitors, project materials, and authorized goods to designated locations in a timely manner.
2. Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure the vehicle is roadworthy and free from technical issues.
3. Ensure all passengers wear seat belts before and during travel.
4. Plan travel routes considering traffic conditions, road closures, weather, and security updates.
5. Ensure the assigned vehicle is clean, fueled, and ready for official travel at all times.
6. Monitor fuel consumption and maintain accurate fuel, mileage, and maintenance records.
7. Maintain complete and accurate vehicle logbooks, ensuring each trip is properly recorded and signed by the traveler when required.
8. Immediately report vehicle defects, accidents, breakdowns, or security incidents to the line manager and arrange repairs as authorized.
9. Ensure all required safety equipment, emergency tools, spare tire, first aid kit, and fire extinguisher are available and in good condition before each trip.
10. Strictly comply with national traffic laws, organizational driving policies, and speed limits at all times.
11. Stop at authorized police or security checkpoints when required and cooperate with relevant authorities.
12. Maintain regular communication with the line manager during official travel, especially on long-distance missions.
13. Assist with administrative tasks such as document delivery, office purchases, mail collection, and other logistics support when assigned.
14. Maintain professionalism, courtesy, and confidentiality while interacting with staff, partners, beneficiaries, and visitors.
15. Ensure the security and proper use of the assigned vehicle and immediately report any loss or damage.
16. Perform any other duties assigned by the Project Coordinator, Project Manager, Logistics Officer, or other authorized supervisors.

Qualification/ Requirements:

• High School Diploma or equivalent qualification.
• Minimum of 3 years of proven driving experience, preferably with International NGOs (INGOs), UN agencies, government institutions, or reputable private organizations.
• Valid national driving license with a clean driving record.
• Good knowledge of local roads, routes, and geographical areas, with the ability to travel to field locations across Afghanistan.
• Good understanding of national traffic laws, road safety regulations, and defensive driving practices.
• Ability to read and write Dari and/or Pashto; basic knowledge of English is an advantage.
• Good physical fitness and willingness to travel extensively and work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays when required.
• Experience in maintaining vehicle logbooks, fuel records, mileage records, and basic vehicle documentation.
• Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance and the ability to identify and report mechanical problems promptly.
• Strong sense of responsibility, honesty, integrity, and professionalism.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact respectfully with staff, partners, beneficiaries, and government officials.
• Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately during emergencies, accidents, or security-related incidents.
• No criminal record or history of misconduct.
• Willingness to comply with Shelter For Life International's policies, Code of Conduct, safeguarding principles, security procedures, and organizational values.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team under minimum supervision.
