Job Description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The Education Trainer is responsible for strengthening teaching quality and instructional practices in Temporary Learning Spaces (TLSs) through teacher training, regular classroom-based coaching, mentoring and technical support. The position supports teachers to apply learner-centred, inclusive, gender-responsive and child-friendly teaching approaches, effective lesson planning and classroom management, and to improve student learning outcomes in line with the approved project design, COAR standards and relevant Education in Emergencies (EiE) principles.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Primary Responsibilities

        Develop and deliver initial, refresher, and on-the-job teacher training in accordance with the approved project training plan and training packages.

        Provide regular in-classroom coaching and mentoring to assigned TLS teachers, including at least two coaching/observation visits per teacher per month, where feasible.

        Observe classroom teaching and provide constructive feedback to improve teaching methodologies, learner participation, classroom management, and student engagement.

        Support teachers in developing and using daily and weekly lesson plans aligned with the approved curriculum.

        Identify teachers’ capacity gaps, teaching challenges and learning needs and address them through coaching, mentoring, training and follow-up support.

  1. Technical Support and Expertise

        Provide technical guidance on teaching methodologies, lesson planning, classroom management, learner participation and classroom-based assessment.

        Support teachers in applying learner-centred, inclusive, gender-responsive, child-friendly and positive-discipline approaches.

        Support teachers to address different learning levels and the needs of children with disabilities and other vulnerable learners.

        Support the effective use of textbooks, teaching and learning materials, training aids and other classroom resources and identify material needs during field visits.

        Support teachers in assessing student learning progress using simple classroom-based assessment tools and using assessment findings to improve teaching.

        Develop, adapt and use appropriate training aids and teaching support materials relevant to TLS contexts.

  1. Coordination and Collaboration

        Coordinate closely with the EiE Specialist/Project Coordinator, Community Mobilizers and TLS teachers to ensure effective implementation of education activities.

        Work with Community Mobilizers, community members, School Shuras/Community Education Committees and other relevant stakeholders to strengthen community support, ownership and sustainability of TLS activities.

        Support community awareness activities related to girls’ education, regular student attendance and safe learning environments.

        Coordinate with relevant MoE hub schools, district and provincial education authorities and other education stakeholders as required.

        Maintain effective communication with field teams regarding teacher capacity gaps, classroom needs, learning materials and other technical issues.

  1. Monitoring and Reporting

        Prepare and implement regular daily, weekly and monthly classroom observation, coaching and supervision plans.

        Maintain complete and accurate records of teacher supervision and coaching visits, classroom observation checklists, training attendance and training evaluation forms.

        Conduct training evaluations and use findings to improve future teacher support and capacity-building activities.

        Monitor TLS learning environments to ensure they are safe, child-friendly, inclusive and conducive to learning.

        Prepare timely training, coaching, supervision and monitoring reports and provide accurate information and evidence required for project monitoring, evaluation and donor reporting.

        Report implementation challenges, teacher capacity gaps and recommended corrective actions to the supervisor.

  1. Adherence to Policies

        Comply with all COAR policies, procedures, Code of Conduct, donor requirements and relevant education standards.

        Fully adhere to child safeguarding, PSEA, protection, accountability and “Do No Harm” principles in all TLS activities.

        Ensure that all teacher training and classroom support promotes non-discrimination, inclusion, gender sensitivity and respectful behavior.

        Maintain confidentiality of beneficiary and staff information and report safeguarding or protection concerns through established COAR mechanisms.

  1. Other Duties

        Participate in project assessments, workshops, training events, technical meetings and project review meetings as required.

        Support the preparation, adaptation and revision of teacher training materials, teaching aids and technical tools.

        Provide technical support during project monitoring, assessments and evaluation activities.

        Perform any other education-related duties assigned by the Line Manager.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATION AND SKILLS

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Education, Education Management, Pedagogy, Psychology, or a closely related field. A degree in Education is strongly preferred. A master’s degree or relevant professional training is an advantage.

Experience: Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in teacher training, academic supervision, teacher coaching, or education project implementation, preferably in Education in Emergencies (EiE), TLS, non-formal or community-based education settings.

Skills Strong knowledge of teaching methodologies, lesson planning and classroom management; practical experience in classroom observation, teacher coaching and mentoring; strong facilitation, training and presentation skills; knowledge of child-friendly, inclusive, gender-responsive and learner-centred education approaches; ability to develop and use training materials and teaching aids; good knowledge of learner assessment; strong communication, interpersonal, documentation and reporting skills; proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint; familiarity with KoBo Toolbox, OneDrive, email and other online data collection/reporting tools is an advantage; and ability to work independently in field-based and challenging environments.

WORK CONDITIONS

Working hours: Full-time position in accordance with the Afghanistan Labor Law and COAR policies, with flexibility according to project requirements and field activities.

Field work: Approximately 80% of working time may be spent in the field supporting teachers and visiting TLSs, subject to project requirements.

Travel: Frequent travel to TLS sites, targeted schools and communities in Herat Province, particularly Injil District and Herat City, is required.
