Save the Children has been working in Afghanistan since 1976. Our way of working close to people and on their own terms has enabled us to deliver lasting change to tens of thousands of children in the country. The UN Convention of the Rights of the Child is the basis of our work.

We are helping children get a better education, we make it possible for more boys and girls to attend school, we help children protect themselves and influence their own conditions. We work with families, communities and health workers in homes, clinics and hospitals to promote basic health in order to save lives of children and mothers.

Job Descriptions:

CHILD SAFEGUARDING:

Level 3:  the post holder will have contact with children and/or young people either frequently (e.g. once a week or more) or intensively (e.g. four days in one month or more or overnight) because they work country programs; or are visiting the country programs; or because they are responsible for implementing the police checking/vetting process staff.

ROLE PURPOSE:

The Case Worker will be responsible for delivering direct child protection case management services to children at risk, including those affected by violence, family separation, child labor, and other protection concerns. They will work under the supervision of the CP MHPSS and Case Management Officer to identify cases, conduct assessments, develop care plans, and provide appropriate referrals. This role also involves significant community engagement to support awareness of child protection risks and to enhance the capacity of communities to protect children.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

Case Management

  • Provide child protection case management services to vulnerable children, including conducting assessments, developing individualized care plans, and providing follow-up support.
  • Ensure children at risk are safely referred to appropriate services, such as health, education, and psychosocial support, following established referral pathways.
  • Conduct home visits to monitor child protection cases, ensuring timely interventions, and documenting progress in case files.
  • Work with children, caregivers, and community members to resolve cases and ensure the safety and well-being of children.
  • Identify children requiring specialized services (e.g., survivors of violence, children with disabilities) and coordinate with relevant agencies for additional support.

Psychosocial Support

  • Provide basic psychosocial support to children and families, addressing emotional, social, and mental health needs.
  • Support the delivery of group-based psychosocial activities for children, especially in Child-Friendly Spaces (CFS).
  • Monitor and support the emotional and psychological well-being of children within the community, referring cases requiring higher-level mental health services.

Community Engagement and Mobilization

  • Actively engage with communities to identify children at risk and raise awareness about child protection issues, including family separation, physical abuse and  child labor.
  • Work closely with community-based Child Protection Networks (CPANs) and community volunteers to support child protection efforts and enhance community responses to child protection risks.
  • Collaborate with religious and community leaders to promote child rights and protection measures within local customs and cultural frameworks.

Monitoring and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate and confidential case management records, ensuring compliance with Save the Children’s case management guidelines and data protection policies.
  • Prepare regular reports on case management activities, including case outcomes, challenges, and lessons learned.
  • Ensure timely submission of case management data to the CP MHPSS and Case Management Officer for monitoring and evaluation purposes.
  • Participate in case management review meetings to ensure the quality of services and to receive guidance on complex cases.

Capacity Building and Training

  • Support the CP MHPSS and Case Management Officer in training community members and volunteers on child protection principles, case identification, and psychosocial support.
  • Attend regular capacity-building sessions on child protection case management, psychosocial support, and child safeguarding to improve the quality-of-service delivery.
  • Actively participate in team meetings and reflect on challenges, successes, and opportunities to enhance case management skills.

Additional job responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities set out above are not exhaustive and the post holder may be required to carry out additional duties from time to time which are reasonable in relation to their level of skills and experience.

In the event of a significant humanitarian emergency, the post-holder will be expected to work outside their normal job description; vary their working hours; and occasionally work from a different location should the need arise.

Job Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS  AND SKILLS

  • Diploma from any Field with one year of work experience
  • At least 1-2 years of experience working with children, preferably in a case management or community-based child protection role.
  • Experience providing basic psychosocial support and conducting case management services.
  • Familiarity with child protection issues, including family separation, violence, child labor, and child marriage.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with children, families, and communities.
  • Knowledge of local culture and language (Dari/Pashto) is essential.
  • Basic computer literacy (e.g., Microsoft Word and Excel) and CPIMS+ for maintaining case records.
  • Knowledge of the dominant language in the province.
  • Ability to travel within project coverage districts & other provinces as needed

Desirable

  • Prior experience working in emergency or conflict-affected settings.
  • Knowledge of Save the Children’s child protection and safeguarding policies.
  • Strong understanding of community-based child protection mechanisms.

Abilities:

  • Being able to promote the best interests of a child within case management.
  • Being able to empower caregivers to support children.
  • Should know what types of child protection issues require a case management response.
  • Should have enough knowledge of child protection and understanding about UNCRC.
  • Being able to differentiate child rights from child protection cases in case management.
  • Should have enough knowledge of case management principles and Do No Harm Policy
  • Being able to travel within the province and outside the province.
  • Good communication skills and able to build working relations with government stakeholders.
  • Should have adequate knowledge of the English language.
