About War Child:

War Child’s flagship Afghanistan program advances social impact in the lives of vulnerable children, women, and their families through its Justice, Education, Health, and Livelihood (Opportunity) program with child protection and gender across its entire program. The country program is undergoing an exciting expansion with newly secured long-term funding for programs in eight provinces Kabul, Nangarhar, Balkh, Samangan, and Sar-e-Pul Provinces.

Job Summary:

The Child Protection Officer is an important and integral part of War Child’s project implementation team. The position holder will be responsible for managing all child protection-related aspects of the project. He/she will provide technical support to the community mobilizer/ Social Worker and other project team members in affective implementation of project activities including the establishment of CFSs, community sensitization, case management, reunification, and NFIs distribution. He/she will be also responsible for the design and rolling out of child protection training to Staff members and program participants. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Child Protection Case Worker responsibilities are as follows:

  1. Project Implementation and Coordination
  • Develop and implement a detailed work plan in coordination with the project team to ensure timely and quality delivery of child protection activities.
  • Collaborate with Social Workers/Community Mobilizers, Case Workers, and other staff to facilitate and coordinate child protection initiatives at the community level.
  • Supervise and provide technical support to field staff, ensuring alignment with project objectives and adherence to child protection standards.
  • Regularly liaise with field teams to monitor progress, address challenges, and update the Project Manager on implementation status.
  1. Capacity Building and Technical Support
  • Conduct training sessions for Community Mobilizers, CFS Facilitators, and other staff on child protection & safeguarding principles, psychosocial support, and community engagement.
  • Guide field teams in conducting public awareness campaigns and community education on child protection, health, and emergency response.
  • Support staff in the identification and referral of vulnerable children and families to specialized service providers or internal support mechanisms.
  1. Community Engagement and Awareness
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with local authorities, community leaders, and stakeholders, respecting cultural sensitivities and traditions.
  • Mobilize communities to actively participate in child protection interventions, including identifying and supporting children in need.
  • Promote community-based mechanisms, such as Child-Friendly Spaces (CFS) and Child Protection Committees (If any), to enhance child safety and well-being.
  1. Case Management and Referrals
  • Oversee the case management process, including intake, assessment, planning, referrals, follow-ups, and documentation, ensuring compliance with safeguarding policies.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records, including individual follow-up forms and referral documentation.
  • Ensure appropriate referral pathways are established and functional for specialized services like health, shelter, and psychosocial support.
  1. Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting
  • Conduct regular field visits to monitor activities, provide support, and ensure quality assurance in child protection programming.
  • Collect data and contribute to project monitoring and evaluation, including lessons learned and best practices with Program Quality Assurance & Learning (PQAL) team.
  • Prepare and submit high-quality weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports to the Senior Project Officer, ensuring timely and accurate updates.
  1. Stakeholder Coordination
  • Maintain strong collaboration with local stakeholders, including government authorities, community groups, and partner organizations, to strengthen child protection systems.
  • Represent the project in relevant coordination meetings and advocate for child protection needs and priorities.
  1. Additional Responsibilities
  • Adhere to the organization’s safeguarding policies, including Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA).
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor that align with the project scope and objectives.

Job Requirements:

Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, Psychology, Law, Sociology, Public Health, or a related field. A master’s degree in a relevant discipline is an advantage.
  • Fluency in Dari and Pashto is required. Proficiency in English is essential for reporting and coordination.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 4-5 years of progressive experience in child protection, social work, or community-based programming in humanitarian or emergency contexts.
  • Proven experience in implementing child protection projects, including case management, psychosocial support, and community mobilization.
  • Strong understanding of child protection principles, safeguarding policies, and emergency response frameworks.
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations, including children, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and communities affected by conflict.
  • Demonstrated capacity to train, supervise, and support field staff in delivering quality interventions.
  • Familiarity with referral mechanisms and coordination with service providers for health, shelter, food, and protection needs.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient in child protection case management, including assessment, planning, referrals, and follow-ups.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage communities and stakeholders effectively.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to adapt to challenging and dynamic environments.
  • Proficiency in data collection, monitoring, and reporting tools.
  • Computer literacy, including proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
