The French Medical Institute for Mothers and Children (FMIC), located in Kabul, Afghanistan, is a premier tertiary care hospital that has been delivering high-quality healthcare to patients from all 34 provinces of Afghanistan since 2006. FMIC serves men, women, and children regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender, or financial status. Through its Patient Welfare Support Programme, it provides subsidized care to those in need. The hospital operates under a unique public-private partnership involving the Governments of Afghanistan and France, La Chaîne de l’Espoir, and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), with day-to-day management led by the Aga Khan University. This collaboration fosters capacity sharing, patient welfare, and healthcare development.
FMIC offers a wide range of services, including inpatient care, outpatient consultations in specialties such as cardiology, surgery, internal medicine, orthopedics, and dermatology, as well as advanced diagnostics like CT scans, MRI, and radiology. The hospital features a 24/7 pharmacy, state-of-the-art laboratory testing, and a robust telemedicine program extending its reach to underserved areas. Since its inception, FMIC has served over 2.3 million patients, conducted 6.5 million laboratory tests, and performed 1.2 million radiology procedures. It was the first hospital in Afghanistan to perform open and closed heart surgeries and to introduce advanced diagnostics such as the 128-slice CT scan and cardiac angiography.
FMIC is internationally recognized for its high standards of care, being ISO-certified and achieving SafeCare certification. Most recently, in October 2024, FMIC was recertified for SafeCare, underscoring its commitment to providing quality healthcare services.
