The Shuhada Organization (SO) is an Afghan organization, non-governmental, non-political, and non-profit, which has been working for more than 35 years for the poor and needy people of Afghanistan in various areas with different programs such as health, education and training, educational programs, vocational training, having nurseries (shelter and orphanage), emergency aid to the destitute and deserving people, and programs for the improvement of rural living standards. The principles and objectives of this institution have been and are charitable services and humanitarian aid for needy and vulnerable people.

1) In the Health Center:

• Registering and performing GMP assessment including measuring weight, height, age and swelling of all children under two years of age.
• Conducting GMP-based counseling for mothers/caregivers of children under two years of age on appropriate practices of infant, child and maternal nutrition (MIYCN) and infection prevention.
  • If the children are normal, in order to strengthen and improve, appropriate methods of feeding mothers and mother's children are encouraged and advised.
  • If the child suffers from acute and severe malnutrition, he/she should be referred to the doctor of the health center for proper treatment and advice.
  • Advise mothers/caregivers to bring their children under two years of age to the health center for monthly visits (GMP).
• Use the MUAC to measure the average upper arm circumference for children aged 6 to 59 months.
• Check whether the child has received vitamin A during the previous NID, if not, refer to the clinic to receive vitamin A.
• Holding a supplementary food show once a month.

2) Advising on maternal nutrition:

• Measurement of the middle part of the upper arm (MUAC), weight, height and determination of BMI or body mass index of lactating mothers and classifying them as normal, underweight, overweight and obese after the first ONC until the mother breastfeeds her baby.
• Based on the findings of BMI or body mass index, provide individual counseling on proper nutrition methods.
• Check whether the nursing mother received IFA tablets during the three months after delivery.

3) In the community level:

• Collaborate and coordinate with Community Health Supervisors (CHS) and Community Health Workers (CHW) at monthly Community Health Worker (CHW) meetings to:
  • Sharing GMP absentee list with CHW for follow up.
  • Ensure that GMP meeting is conducted by CHW regularly in the community.
  • Guidance to CHWs on topics such as GMP, counseling skills and appropriate home visits.

4) Registration and Reporting:

• Have regular reports to monitor and follow up on the provision of nutrition services.
• Use of "Mother and Child Health Book" in the provinces where this book is applicable.
• Identify patients who require follow-up visits and share information with CHW/CHS.
