Job Descriptions:

The Legal Information Counsellor will be responsible for providing accurate, timely, and accessible legal information to individuals and communities, with a primary focus on civil documentation (such as birth certificates, national IDs, marriage certificates, and other essential legal papers). The counsellor will guide clients on legal processes and administrative procedures, ensuring they understand their rights and the steps required to obtain or update documentation. In addition, the role involves raising awareness on available legal services, referring complex cases to qualified legal aid providers, and maintaining confidentiality and professionalism at all times.

The Legal Information Counsellor responsibilities are as follows:

  • Provide accurate information and guidance to individuals and communities on civil documentation processes (e.g., birth, marriage, divorce, death certificates, national IDs).
  • Support clients in understanding their legal rights and the administrative procedures required to obtain or update civil documents.
  • Conduct awareness-raising sessions on the importance of civil documentation and available legal services.
  • Support the community members in replacing or getting civil documentation such as NIDs, birth certificates, marriage certificates etc.
  • Identify and refer complex or sensitive cases to qualified legal aid providers or specialized services.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant laws, policies, and administrative procedures related to civil documentation.
  • Ensure confidentiality, impartiality, and respect for clients’ dignity throughout the counselling process.
  • Keep records of counselling sessions, prepare reports, and contribute to data collection for program monitoring and improvement.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with local authorities, service providers, and partner organizations to improve access to legal documentation.
  • Participate in trainings, workshops, and capacity-building activities to strengthen professional skills and service quality.
  • Perform any other task assigned by the supervisor.

Job Requirements:

Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in law, Political Science, Social Sciences, Social Work, or a related field (or equivalent relevant experience).
  • Master’s degree will be considered a plus point.

Experience:

  • At least 3 Years of work experience preferably with NNGOs or INGOs in legal counselling including direct work with local communities.
  • Demonstrated experience working with vulnerable children and families, including conducting assessments, case identification, and providing referrals.
  • Previous experience in community engagement, awareness campaigns, and mobilization activities.
  • Experience working in coordination with government bodies (e.g., CPAN, MoLSA), local authorities, and humanitarian organizations is preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Good Communication and interpersonal skills including reporting writing.
  • Good knowledge of community development especially working with children, women and families.
  • Excellent problem solving and presentation skills.
  • Flexibility and ability to work under pressure and meeting of deadlines.
  • Culture sensitive and respect for local norms.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy of the cases.
  • Willingness to travel and stay in remote areas and inhospitable environment.
