About Muslim Hands International:

Muslim Hands Afghanistan – MHA obtained formal registration from the Ministry of Economy in Afghanistan with registration No. 141 in 2005 and is now firmly established with its Headquarters in Kabul, and is fully engaged in relief and development activities in different parts of the country. The work of Muslim Hands in Afghanistan involves; improving the lives of poor and vulnerable through the provision of education, health, WASH, Protection, Livelihood, advocacy, Agriculture and other specialized projects e.g. rehabilitation of the disabled, water purification and sanitation schemes, orphan sponsorship scheme, income generation activities and emergency aid / relief activities in Afghanistan. Muslim Hands Afghanistan aims struggling its way to build a secured society through its core competencies including Health, WASH, Education, Emergency Relief, Food security, Livelihood and Protection. Muslim Hands Afghanistan was formed by a group of professionals and today it is blessed with +100 members include men, women and youth from different skill sets including medical professionals, Program and operation experts, and other professionals in non-profit sector. Muslim Hands Afghanistan is working under the effective leadership of nine national and international members of its board of trustees.

Job Descriptions:

1. Purpose of the Position

The Veterinary Officer will provide technical and field-level veterinary support for the livestock recovery component of the project, which aims to restore and strengthen the livelihoods of earthquake-affected households who lost their livestock. The position focuses on ensuring the healthy distribution, management, and sustainability of goats provided to beneficiary households, while building community capacity in animal health, welfare, and climate-resilient livestock practices.

2. Key Responsibilities

A. Livestock Distribution and Technical Oversight

  • Provide technical support for the procurement, vaccination, and distribution of goats, combined feed, and veterinary supplies.
  • Ensure livestock inputs meet quality, health, and welfare standards prior to and after distribution.
  • Conduct regular field visits to monitor animal health, survival rates, and beneficiary livestock management practices.

B. Community Mobilization and Beneficiary Support

  • Support transparent community mobilization, beneficiary survey/selection processes, and project coordination.
  • Provide on-site technical advice to beneficiary households on goat care, housing, feeding, hygiene, and handling.
  • Promote inclusive participation, with particular attention to vulnerable and earthquake-affected households.

C. Training and Capacity Building

  • Deliver practical training to beneficiaries on animal health and welfare, including disease prevention, vaccination, deworming, parasite control, and early disease detection.
  • Train livestock owners on fodder production, feed management, grazing practices, and basic livestock nutrition.
  • Provide awareness sessions on personal and environmental hygiene, water and sanitation, and basic dairy handling and processing.
  • Raise awareness among beneficiaries on the importance of preventive veterinary care and sustainable investment in animal health.

E. Market Linkages

  • Support beneficiary households and producer groups to understand livestock-related market opportunities.

F. Coordination, Monitoring, and Reporting

  • Work closely with the project manager, operations teams, and local sectoral authorities to ensure effective implementation of livestock activities.
  • Collect and report data on livestock distribution, animal health status, training activities, and beneficiary progress.
  • Prepare regular field reports, case studies, and success stories as required.
  • Participate in coordination meetings and share technical feedback to improve project outcomes.

G. Compliance and Additional Duties

  • Ensure livestock activities comply with environmental, safeguarding, gender, and PSEA standards.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned by the line manager in support of project objectives.

3. Qualifications and Experience

              Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from a recognized institution.

              Experience:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in animal health services, preferably with humanitarian or development programs.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong technical knowledge of livestock health, nutrition, and management.
  • Experience working with rural and vulnerable communities.
  • Ability to deliver practical training and provide field-based technical supervision.
  • Good coordination, reporting, and documentation skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Fluency in Dari and Pashto; basic understanding of English is an asset.
  • Strong commitment to gender equality, community empowerment, and ethical conduct.
