Background:

CRS has been working on behalf of Afghan families since 2002, with hundreds of experienced Afghan staff working in offices across the country. We provide emergency relief, inclusive education, improved livelihoods, and other essential services to tens of thousands of households. The country’s long conflict has left many families displaced and impoverished, but the war’s end in 2021 has opened the exciting possibility of reaching many previously inaccessible communities.

CRS is currently implementing programs in the provinces of Bamiyan, Daykundi, Ghor, Herat, and Kabul, and is exploring additional expansion. CRS maintains five main offices in the country as well as several sub-offices that support the direct implementation of program activities. With over 225 staff, the Country Program is growing to meet new needs throughout the country.

Job Descriptions:

As a member of CRS’ education project team, you will be responsible for supporting the implementation of technical curriculum and teacher capacity strengthening activities to improve the quality of instruction in CBE classrooms in Ghor province.  You will drive program quality by providing technical oversight to key components of partner-implemented education programming, such as teacher support (training, mentoring, teaching quality assessment), monitoring student learning achievement, providing technical support to the local partner field staff, and community engagement. Your thorough and service-oriented approach will ensure that the project consistently applies best practices and constantly works towards improving the impact of its benefits to those we serve.

Roles and Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the learning needs assessment and teacher competency assessment in the field for partner and / or peer organizations.
  • Support efforts to monitor the success and outcomes of CRS’ contributions to partner capacity strengthening and sharing.
  • Report any teacher professional development-related challenges and gaps identified to inform adjustments to plans and implementation schedules.
  • Collaborate with implementing partners to identify partner technical staff professional development needs and goals, in coordination with the Project Officer (Senior Master Trainer)
  • In coordination with the Project Officer (Senior Master Trainer), work with local partner staff to ensure that staff and teachers understand and adhere to safeguarding standards and a standard teacher code of conduct.
  •  Support the coordination and implementation of all assigned teacher professional development activities as outlined in the Detailed Implementation Plan in line with CRS program quality principles, standards and donor requirements, and industry good practices. Contribute to the development of teacher capacity strengthening plans and resources for partner organizations, provide coaching, and accompaniment to NNGO’s Master Trainer and Teacher Trainers in all teacher's professional development and curriculum adaptation-related activities. In coordination with the Project Officer (MEAL) work with CRS’ implementing partner to promote and model the correct use of MEAL forms and contribute to accountability and learning activities.
  • In coordination with the Project Officer (Senior Master Trainer), support CRS’ implementing partner to tailor and adapt technical training and determine refresher training needs for teachers.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master's degree in education or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience in education. Teacher training experience preferred, particularly in Dari and math.
  • Experience with NGO and for an I/NGO would be a plus
  • Additional experience may substitute for some education.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities  

  • Good relationship management skills and the ability to work closely with local partners and community members.
  • Attention to details, accuracy and timeliness in executing assigned responsibilities.
  • Proactive, results-oriented and service-oriented
  • Familiarity with Afghan Child Read curriculum, and national elementary curriculum.
  • Experience developing technical training and curriculum.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team of national and international staff
  • Excellent communication skills and good judgment with regards to problem solving

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong familiarity with the education system in Afghanistan.
  • Experience working on psychosocial support (PSS) and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum and activities.
  • Experience working in rural communities preferred.
  • Proficiency in Pashtu - Spoken and Written 
  • Experience using MS Windows and MS Office packages (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

Key Working Relationships:  

Internal: Program Manager for Basic Needs and Services, Project Officer (Senior Master Trainer), Senior Project Officer, Meal Project Officer, Program Manager for Education and  Ghor Head of Office

External: Partner teams, peer organizations, and target communities

Required Languages: Fluency in Dari and working proficiency in English preferred.

Travel – This position will be based in Ghor, with anticipated 80% travel to partner offices and to field locations.
